Reviewed by Mike on 04/07/2007this player is fantastic. the sound is amazing and its super long battery life means it beats an ipod any day. it does have a few reliability issues; immediately after the 12 month warranty expired the sound from the left channel died and i have had a few issues with it occassionally crashing and freezing. aside from this however, it is overall a very good player although i would recommend investing in a better pair of headphones than those supplied to fully take advantage of the astounding sound quality Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Mark on 27/01/2007 I've had my Zen going on 3 years now only had one problem and that was losing the power cord, But that was easily solced using a universal So far it seems only morons have had serious problems i've used my zen on a near daily bases since i got it which was when i got it a few days after it came out~ it cost a bit more but my Ipod died after 4 months of use this was well worth the extra bulk my battery time usually runs without stopping for 26-29 hours the sound quality is great in my opinion, Sorry to those of you who have had such bad luck. so far i only have 900ish songs on my zen but i also use it for storing compressed videos untill i can get them transferred mine has never froze or died or had any problems~And this is comming from one of the pickiest people on earth :) Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Espen on 07/12/2006 I have used my Zen Touch almost every day for about a year now. Good things: Excellent battery life and audio quality. 20GB is more then enough for me. Bad things: I'm still not comfortable with the touch strip. It's too sensitive for me. I don't like the menu system either. The included software could be better too. It should have been a bit easier to transfer music to it. The quality of the player seems to be good. I've used it a lot, with no problems - but I'm careful with my stuff, so I'm used to that. I would like to record when I read from school books, but then I need a FM wireless remote. OK... I have been to 15 stores, and not one of them had this remote. I'll probable end up ordering it from a web shop. If I can find one. It is supposed to be expensive too. But overall: The Zen Touch gives good audio quality, large capasity drive and long lasting battery at an afordable price. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Josh Brunelle on 22/09/2006 Amazing. I've never been an ipod fan, but the rest of my family has them, and this beats all of them hands down. Sound is stellar (Most files are mp3 ripped at 224kbps). With practice, the scroll pad is very easy and convinient. It is durable as anything, I've dropped it more than once from chest level (that's at least 4'), and I've only had to reset this thing once. I've owned it for more than a year, and I have used it every day, no exaggeration. This thing comes with me everyday in my car, then inside at night so it doesn't get too cold. The warranty sticker is still intact, so I dont know what this other guy did. He is either lying, or made a pouch for it out of sandpaper. Once again, this mp3 player is AMAZING. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Robert on 09/09/2006 You have to realise what happens when something stops working. If you don't have Warranty, then you've had it. The first one I got didn't work at all when I got it so I had to get it replaced (postage at my expense). The new machine had a little sticker over one of the screws saying "warranty void if removed". My sticker fell off after about 3 weeks. It does need to be re-booted occassionally but no big problem. The big problem is that I dropped it the other day and the touch pad now doesn't work. OK, it's my fault I dropped it. But, when you're lugging this bulky thing around a lot, accidents happen. There's no way to get it fixed as far as I can see. I wouldn't mind paying some money to get it fixed but it doesn't seem possible to do that. I have seen other postings on the web about non-functioning touch pads. I can still use the machine with reduced functionality but am now saving up for a replacement. It won't be a Creative. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Andy on 07/08/2006 I have had it nearly 2 years and apart form a few freezes that were sorted by a reset I haven't had any problems. The sound quality is good, the battery life is excellent, I have dropped it, trodden on it, sat on it (because I am an idiot not deliberately) and it still keeps going. It hasn't got the features of other models but I wanted an MP3 player, not a camera, a phone, photo starage or a video player. It does exactly what it said on the box, no fuss, no needless features and rubbish. Cheaper and more durable than an i-pod. No nonsense. Highly recommended. Dont personally like the way it navigates the tracks, but that is a minor issue. Certainly no reliability problems at all, and thats after very heavy use. Battery lasts me a week or two, with 2-3 hours use a day, which is brilliant in my opinion. When its getting low, I put it on charge over night, and its back to full power and another 10+ days by the next morning. I have however looked after mine, its never been dropped etc. But it has travelled all over with me, and seems pretty robust. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Adam Latz from USA on 14/07/2006 First of all im tired of people who bitch and complain that their player freezes up when 8 times out of 10 it is due to mistreatment on the owners part. Second the way to keep you battery lasting long... only plugin the player to charge it when it is done take it off as soon as you can, then use it until the battery dies then plug it in again... this keeps the battery conditioned and therefore will last longer Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Caroline from USA on 14/07/2006 About 2 months after I bought this player, it began freezing when I tried to skip songs... I would then have to reboot the player by sticking a paper clip in it. After about 5 months of this it failed on me completely, and will now no longer start up. Don't look to Creative for help after this period, they charge you $15 for 30 minutes of over the phone help, and they don't even have an 800 number so you have to pay long distance. DON'T BUY THIS Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Paul from Australia on 10/07/2006 Well in just 8 months my 2nd player has just seized up. The first had it's hardrive completely whipped (for no apparent reason) after just 4 weeks and could no longer have mp's loaded onto it. Manafacter advised that it's a "reasonably common problem" and sent me a replacement! The replacement has now completely seized up so will try re-setting it but am extremely dissapointed in this product. Battery life is absolutely junk as wewll - get about 4 hours maximum. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Richard on 05/07/2006 At first there were no problems with this player. Then it froze a couple of times and I used the reset button to sort it out. It annoyingly worked on and off with WMP 10 so I upgraded to the new firmware. This worked a treat and everything seemed great for a few months. Then one day all the buttons including the reset button stopped working while merrily playing a track. Then everything went blank. Now nothing works!!! Grr, no wonder this thing only has a 90 day warranty - it's likely they know this thing is unreliable - I won't be buying my next player from Creative and I will be telling everyone else I know to do the same. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Ian Flaherty on 23/06/2006 Well for 13 months this mp3 player was easily worth the whole five stars (notice that takes it just outside of Creative's support period?! Either a clever piece of trickery by Creative or a pure coincidence...) However since then the battery life has been abysmal. I notice how people have, since its introduction, been commenting about the issues it has with becoming unresponsive. I can't say I've had any problems with that, but looking around I can't see any other reports of poor battery life. For a battery that used to run for the suggested 24 hours+ it is now only going for 5 hours max. It wasn't even a gradual reduction as far as I can remember. HAS ANYBODY ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS? I bought from a reputable dealer so I have no reason to believe it is a defective knock-off or anything of the like. I will soon be buying a Creative Zen Vision (Not the :M version with the in-built battery, my trust in such a player is obviously somewhat reduced when it comes to buying Creative!) I would like to get this player functioning again either as a back-up or to reclaim the whole in my walet that the Zen Vision will create. All in all a great, functional player that is reliable and does what it saya on the tin... for 13 months :) If anyone can point me in the right direction for help with the issue it would be much appreciated. It's actually a pretty good MP3 player. Really, the only faults I can think of are 1. I couldn't use the headphones that came with it at all - after about 10 minutes of use my ears hurt really badly. The sound quality from them wasn't too bad though. 2. Maybe I'm just no good with this sort of thing, but I couldn't really get the hang of the scroll strip thing. I tried it on every sensitivity setting and such and still never managed to get it quite right. I now own a video iPod.. and even in comparison to that, the Creative Zen Touch holds its own. I never had any of the freezing issues that others seems to experience.. perhaps I was just lucky.. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Antony on 11/05/2006 I have owned my Zen Touch now for 11 months, and I can only share my experiences with any future buyers. Firstly, in these 11 months a friend has had both an i-Pod 20GB and an i-Pod Nano stop working altogether, so I did feel somewhat vindicated in my choice of a Zen, as it wasn't the better known, or most fashionable of the MP3 players. That said, another friend also bought a Zen, and they have experienced the freezing problems detailed in several reviews. Personally, it has happened to me once, but was resolved by letting the battery run down, and it has suffered a few drops to the fall without any damage. As for the capacity, I have around 4000 tracks and it is probably 80% full. Putting the tracks on is simple enough, although if you don't have USB 2.0 it takes a while. As for the software, it isn't the best, but it does the necessary job. the problem is you have to figure it all out yourself, as the supplied users guide is hazy at best. One annoying aspect is the inability to upload your tracks from the player itself to your PC, but I imagine this is true of most MP3 players. I just dread losing it, and all the MP3's I only have on the player. Battery life is extremly good, and worth the extra weight. The Zen doesn't exactly weigh you down, but you know you have it in your pocket, which could be a positive thing, depending on your outlook. Audio quality is good, though I couldn't say what the headphones are like, I use my own. When not using headphones, I plug the Zen into my stereo via an audio cable that connects the headphone socket of the Zen the the aux of the speaker (much cheaper than buying specialist speakers for a player). Lookswise, it isn't the prettiest girl at the party, but if you are buying a player for looks alone, then that way leads to Apple town. However, it does have a certain charm, and I quite like the touch pad, although it is sensitive and takes getting used to (even when set on the lowest setting) Overall, I've been pleased with my Zen, and have used it pretty much every day since I've owned it. However, I would still advise buyer discretion. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Alex from USA on 05/05/2006 The Zen Touch is in my opinion the best mp3 player on the market. I wasn't going to write a review until I saw some problems people have had with the player. First off, I'm sure everyone knows this, but you just need to press the reset button on the side with a pin if it freezes. If you are trying to play your music on your computer directly from the mp3 player, and it won't work, download a program called JBHTTP. Just search on Google to find it. It uses the streaming capability of windows media player to get around that problem. However, you have to have an internet connection for this to work. Hope I could help. Everyone who is thinking about getting a Zen instead of a crappy protection riddled ipod, you can rest assure that it's a great machine. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Duncan on 25/04/2006 The first 6 months of ownership were reasonably problem free, apart from the touch pad, which you'll either love or hate (I hated it) and the track ordering:- tracks are not always stored in the correct order in the Creative Media Source player (the media player/download manager which runs on your computer). They are recorded alphabetically rather than in album order, a particular problem when playing DJ mixed albums. When using CMS on my pc, I had to play tracks in time recorded order to overcome this. I also noticed that synchronizing the computer with the mp3 player produced errors when trying to update several albums at the same time. Workaround:- download albums one by one to the mp3 player, which is obviously time consuming. After about 6 months, I performed a synchronization between my pc and mp3 player and discovered that several albums had lost tracks, which now appeared as albums, with just one track. I decided to visit Creative's website to download the latest version of the CMS player. After 45 minutes my computer was still "hung", so I had to abort, and then I discovered that the original CMS player didn't work. I deleted off/uninstalled all Creative software and tried to reinstall from the original disk, however, this wouldn't work either. I re-visited their website to discover that if you try to download the latest version of the CMS player, you cannot ever reinstall the original, even if the download fails. I had protracted correspondence with their customer service dept., but after I threatened legal action, they agreed to replace both the mp3 player and all software. I have worked with computers for over 20 years and have designed some very complex systems, used by multi-national companies around the world and am not a novice in these matters. It strikes me that by their offer to replace their product, they acknowledge that they have a problem with their software, although they have not admitted this. Also, I had to do several "techie" things to sort out my computer, as amongst other things, my cd drive failed to work. I’m not sure I can be bothered to pursue their offer of a replacement as I have already expended considerable time on their deficient software and, as my business rate is £100 per hour - I'm sure you get the picture! I regret to say, but having heard other friends' problems with iPod, my general advice would be to steer clear of American companies when purchasing an mp3 player. Samsung mp3 players seem to have no detractors, so will maybe try them next. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Teika on 22/04/2006 I have had my Creative for a year now and it is GREAT! I'm not sure what all the warranty talk it about, but if you have kept your receit, the Creative has a 1 Year warranty. I know. I called and asked before I purchased it. No problems. I recommend it to anyone over the iTunes junk. iTunes suck. It takes next to no time to transfer files and I have saved music and data on mine! I was really disappointed, what a crappy device, until Creative released a new Firmware, I was happy again! It haven't frozen since I flash it, but the really great thing, is the new hard-disk structure and function. It was really great that you could make directories, like my HD in the PC, instead of having all of you music in one directory! And then I've tested the battery, with full volume, it lasted for 29+ hours! So with the new firmware, new hard-disk structure and the long lasting battery, I have to give 5 stars! So i gave to to my sister and went for a Zen touch. £10 dearer than a mini but 5X the storage, and they're cooler looking! I can confirm the monumental battery life (once a week on my usage which is at least 3 full hrs a day, like my Nokia 6310i :)... I only have one gripe and one gripe alone - the DAMN PLAYLIST. After using the mini, i appreciated the playlist management system, and specifically the mini's ability to compile a 'most listened to' track list as a playlist - automatically!!! I can't get the hang of the creative zen touch playlist system, and to me that's 50% of the music player. I've resorted to being crafty with album names etc just to get around it, but i'm having to use the menu more than i did with the iPod. Wouldn't go back tho - great product otherwise. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by DJ Woodsy on 15/03/2006 Hey Guys, I understand that a couple of people are having issues with their player. I can say, that I've had no problems with this awesome player. I purchased this last May and only had the one or two problems with it freezing. All I had to do is press that little dot thing on the side and hey presto I'm back in action. This player has come in handy for so many things. Quickish transfers make things a lot easier. Takes a little bit to master the slide, but hey, that's only a minor technicality. It's more trouble trying to sort out the Ipod. I would rate this player so much higher than the overpriced, copyrighted iPods that everyone so raves on about. I've driven the player, wired remote & fm transmitter to the ground & still not much dramas. My advice, is also get a fm transmitter that plugs in ur cigarette lighter, sound quality is almost perfect, like you were playing a cd. The menus are a hell of a lot better than iPod, considering you can search for whatever by the extra menu that pops up allowing you to jump straight to the first letter. I don't see apple allowing you to do that. I've driven to Sydney from Brisbane (12hr trip) and then around the city with no dramas with battery life, but I believe mr Apple wouldn't have survived the trip down. I recommend this Creative Zen Touch very very highly, though it may be a bit bulkier than the competition, it's sturdier, outlasting battery, easy to navigate menus & no dramas transferring files. Machines will have their faults, nothing is perfect. Spend the money on this machine & Creative have a great website to assist with firmware etc. Take care guys & gurlz. Comparing the Zen Touch with my friend's IPod, there is actually very little difference. The only noticeable thing is that the Zen Touch is heavier, but that is hardly a big problem. Sound quality is excellent, no discernable difference from that of an IPod. Easy to use, and excellent battery life - I get about 35 hours from fully charged to fully discharged. Much better than the IPod. I note other reviewers' comments about "freezing up", but I have to say that in 12 months worth of use, my Zen Touch has only frozen twice, and each time a simple "reset" did the trick, with no loss of data. The only gripe I have is that you have to use the special Creative Labs software, you can't just simply interface the Zen Touch with Windows Explorer. The 'creative media source' is great for quick copying of C.D.'s, creating playlists and altering song/album/artist names. The touch pad is easy to master with time and of better standard than the iPOD. This player also comes with a option of sound alteration allowing you to better the sound quality according to your music genre. I have bought 'creative iTRIGUE' speakers to allow myself to listen to my songs alound in my house. This has great sound quality and is great if you want background music. This player, however, does not have a removeable battery (like the iPOD), so as the battery eventually dies (roughly 12-18 months time) so will the player. Well people said it freezes much so i was a little scared. Well i bought it anyway. I'm really satisfied. I've never had to reset it and i think it's just bad luck for those that did have that problem. Pros: -long battery life -good software -touchpad works fine (I have it on low sensitivity) -great navigation -nice big screen (from what i was used to) well actually everything is a pro! I can only think of one thing that may bother someone. The size. THat's it. Its twice as thick as an ipod and slightly bigger. Well i don't give a damn about that sort of difference. My friend has an Ipod and its major scratched and really greasy and the screen is all scratched up. My Zen fell of a bookcase and NO SCRATCH. I couldn't believe it. My friends Ipod scratched up after a silly drop and mine was perfectly fine. The earbuds supplied with it aren't really bad as everyone claims but i must admit they aren't bad. I can go on about this mp3player cuase i really love it but i think i had it. O yeh some say the screen is dim but if you set the contrast on 20% it's perfect. And the touchpad is maybe a love it or hate it thing i don't know but i love it. Very easy and comfortable even when high sensitivity. well that's about it. The main reason why i chose the Zen instead of the iPod/iPod mini however was mainly due to price difference - £180/£220 for a 10/20GB memory, 12 hour battery life and black and white screen (or blue if your lucky enough to get the iPod itself)? OR - £140 for 20GB memory, 24 hour battery life and a blue screen!? Your choice...! Oh yeah, the other thing which increases my already very high opinion of the Zen Touch is the fact that i can listen to my music whilst going to sleep and not worry about the MP3 playing all night because once the song finishes it only stays on for 5minutes before idle shutdown. The iPod does not do this! This is the best Christmas present I've ever had and I've used it every day since getting it, no fails or freezing. Also the independant volume controll buttons are very handy. I would even recommend this player over the Zen Micro. Even though the Micro does have more features such as the radio and voice recorder built in...most would find these features ultimatly useless for day to day use of an MP3 player, and with 4x the space you get with the Touch, you can just put all the songs you would hear on the radio and put them on the player...thus eliminating the need for radio. In comparison to many other mp3s on the market this is definately one of the best. The reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is only due to a few minor complaints such as the weight of if which makes it difficult to listen to it when walking, running etc, and the only other slight complaint I have is that you often get a 'please wait' message up to load the music which can be kinda annoying if you have a large playlist to load. The software supplied was fine to install and use. Thoroughly recommended. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Paul Charters on 15/03/2005 Absolutely wonderful piece of equipment. Feels solid, behaves solidly (especially if you turn the sensitivity down on the slide-select on the front), and responds beautifully. It has a VERY fast transfer rate (without halting part-way through if there is a large list of items to transfer, which the ipod always did). I've tried the ipod and found it a flimsy-feeling and having a much dodgier response and reliability. The software for the Zen Touch is FAR superior and simple to use (unless you are a Mac user I suppose - not having one I'm not sure, but if you're a PC user the software is awfully flaky). People rave about iTunes, but I found it clunky, invasive and very assuming. The massive support on the software front for the Zen range (such as from Red Chair Software) makes life MUCH easier and lastly the battery life of the Zen Touch genuinely IS 24 hours (in fact mine went on for longer) and not just an on-the-box value. The sound quality is amazing and the touch pad is brilliant to use. It holds loads and loads of songs that will last you a life time. it is a great alternative to the i-pod. Who needs more? The Zen Touch supports a range of formats, including WMA. Transferring files from a PC is quick and easy with USB 2.0 and the supplied software. Battery life is excellent & better than an ipod. I only need to charge it once a week. Sound quality is good, although not the best ever, but I'm probably being fussy. Styling is not as cool as an ipod, but all round it's a better product. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
