Apple iPod Video 30GB Review

Rating:
Date: 01/12/2006
The 5th generation iPod is 30% thinner than the previous generation and has more memory and longer battery life. It also has the capability to play video, and has an improved display. The new iPod continues Apple's tradition of ease-of-use, with the touch-sensitive click wheel and well-designed user interface letting you select and play songs and videos with ease. A new search function has been introduced, letting you search by song, artist or album name using the click wheel.

The display has been improved, and is 60% brighter and 25% larger than the previous generation. The resolution has also been increased to 320 x 240 pixels, which is in line with the latest mobile phones, making it possible to watch videos of films and TV programmes. iTunes now allows you to browse clips of films and TV programmes, which you can then download and watch on your iPod. There are also a growing number of free videos available for download.

The iPod Video is available in 30 Gbyte or 80 Gbyte sizes. The 80 Gbyte version can store up to 20,000 songs, or 100 hours of video! Even the 30 Gbyte version can store up to 7,500 songs (that's 500 hours of music), which ought to be enough for most users.

The battery in the latest generation of iPod has enough power for 14 hours of music playback, or 3.5 hours of video.

The games capability of the 5th generation iPod has also been greatly improved. The higher resolution display makes graphics more detailed and allows games to be more complex. You can now also buy a large selection of games from iTunes. There are a few extras included too - a calendar, clock, stopwatch and a screen lock.

Of all MP3 players, the iPod probably has the greatest range of accessories, both genuine Apple products and third party accessories. These include car kits, docking units, speaker systems and camera connections.

One of the problems with the older iPods was the relatively poor battery life, but this has been improved somewhat in the 5th generation. The 80 Gbyte version has even better battery life. In reality though, battery life is still going to be a problem for many users, and Apple really do need to work on this. The other problem is that iPods tend not to be the most durable piece of consumer electronics, and this seems to apply to the latest generation too. They do tend to get scratched, freeze sometimes, or even break completely, so treat yours with care if you want it to last! Having said all that, we can highly recommend the latest iPod as probably one of the best MP3 players currently available. If you don't need the 30 Gbytes of space, then an iPod Nano is a more compact and cheaper option, although the 30 Gbyte iPod really isn't that big.

One question that gets asked more and more these days is whether a dedicated MP3 player is really necessary, when the latest mobile phones come with quite sophisticated music players built in. The answer depends on how much you plan to use your MP3 player. For occasional use, a phone with a good MP3 player will probably do the job. Check that it has a decent amount of memory (preferably a memory card) and will support the kind of headphone you plan to use. A phone may not be as user-friendly as an iPod, but it sure saves the hassle of carrying two devices around. On the other hand, more serious users will appreciate the benefit of owning an iPod as well as a phone. The benefits include ease-of-use and the increased memory available - most phones can store a maximum of 1 or 2 Gbytes (enough for a few hundred songs), compared with the 30 Gbytes of an iPod (enough for 7,500 songs - that's hundreds of albums).

Features of the Apple iPod Video 30GB include:

  • Holds up to 15,000 songs and full-color album art
  • 30GB model is 4.1 x 2.4 x 0.43 inches
  • Bright 2.5-inch, 320 x 240 pixel TFT display
  • Up to 20 hours of battery life
  • Holds up to 25,000 photos
  • Holds up to 150 hours of video
  • Plays video or photo slideshows on TV via the optional Dock
  • Apple Click Wheel
  • Accessory-compatible Dock connector
  • Dock works with the new Apple Remote
  • Charges and syncs via USB
  • Works with Mac OS X or Windows 2000/XP
  • Syncs contacts, calendars and to-do lists
  • Available in Black or White

That said, it holds 7500 songs, pics, videos and looks great. itunes is easy to use and to download from. I would recommend buying the black one as it looks sleeker nd doesnt really show scratches. All-in-all I havn't found a better music player yet and definately recommend it.......

Bought the ipod video 30gb a few months ago with the Bose Sounddock for the sole purpose of having it in the lounge as our main music system, and I have to say both items are outstanding. The fact you can put all your cds onto one tiny machine then play it through a speaker that gives such a rich, true sound is fantastic and all for £385. A1.

Well, I like my iPod, but have quite a few niggles about it. I've owned it for 2 months and have used it enough to have a realistic opinion of it. First of all, it looks amazing when you first take it out of the box. I have the black version, and it's a beautifully sexy gloss black finish, with stainless steel on the back and sides. But within a nanosecond of taking it out of the box, it's covered in fingerprints and that's the way it stays forever afterwards. I also couldn't help noticing that even though my iPod is black, it comes with a white USB lead and headphones. Lack of attention to detail here, I'm afraid. Then comes a battle with iTunes. If you like Apple stuff, you'll love iTunes no doubt, but for everyone else, it seems that iTunes is always trying to do its own thing, and you have to work against the grain to get the result you want. Anyway, I have got my iPod fully loaded now, and I have used nothing like the full 30 Gbytes capacity. You'd have to be totally music obsessed to run out of memory. Audio quality is faultless as far as I am concerned. Anyone who says that audio quality is bad must be using rubbish headphones. The headphones supplied are adequate, but it's probably a good idea to upgrade them if you use them a lot. Personally, I listen to music mostly in my car, running the iPod through my car stereo, and the resulting sound quality is outstanding. Battery life is rubbish. I have to recharge it far too often, and I can't easily tell how much juice is left in the battery. Other complaints: you cannot shuffle playlists. This really bugs me. The only way to shuffle the order of songs is to shuffle every song stored on the disk. You cannot change the order of songs on individual playlists. So, for example, if I'm feeling in a good mood and I want to listen to cheerful songs that I can sing along to, I have to play my "Hot, hot, hot" playlist in the exact order that I play it every time. In order to shuffle songs, I end up including my entire library of music, so I get my "Dark depression" and "Gloomy day" playlists mixed in. I arrive at work feeling all mixed up and loathing Apple. This is the fifth generation iPod, so surely Apple have had time to sort out this issue. I bought the iPod because I'd heard that they are really user-friendly, but frankly I don't think they are. Finally, I have noticed in the instructions that there is a special button that you have to switch on and off, then hold the menu and centre buttons for 6 seconds "if your iPod stops responding." Call me a whinger, but I've never before owned a product which the manufacturer has released knowing that it is likely to fail and has provided a special button to fix the problem. Is there a button on my TV that I have to hold down for 6 seconds with some other weird combination of keys when my TV stops responding? No, there is not. So far, I haven't needed to use this button, but I fear that one day my luck will run out and my iPod will start freezing and crashing whenever it feels like it. I might need to make more use of my "Dark depression" playlist soon ...

I’m iPod 30gb 5g owner from couple of mouths. Great sound quality, perfect wheel navigation, outstanding design. Amazing machine if you only listen MP3’s. Video function is simply unusable. The reason is poor battery life. The battery power is enough to listen MP3’s for three days(aprox.4 hours a day), but when running the video it drains it for one or two hours if you don’t use the navigation. When we listen MP3’s, the memory buffer refills only one time if twenty minutes, but videos (depends of coding quality) coast player to read the hard drive almost constantly. When I got the iPod, the firs thing was to upload several compressed movies and I was quite disappointed, when I realized that I can what hardly watch one movie with full charged battery. Now I reduced the contrast of the iPod to minimum and delated all videos form the hard drive. Using iPod only as a music player and I am satisfied. I advice you to buy an Apple 5gen iPod, but don’t even think to watch clips and videos on it. The picture quality is perfect, but the battery should be three times stronger at least. P.S> I both new, third part battery with disassembling tools, which is 40% stronger. Just it case if mine die.

Very nice piece of kit, I'd recommend this to anyone who was thinking of getting an MP3 player / iPod. The main reason I bought this was to use in car. My car has a cd changer in the boot. THe problem with this, is that it used to take me ages to choose which 6 cd's I wanted, and then they would stay in there forever, so I'd get bored listening to the same music, and then when I'd change teh cd's, I'd be back to square 1. So, bought the iPod - used my proceeds from giving up smoking, and chose the 30gb version, which I thought was the best value. Downloaded all my music and realised I had only used half its capcity! Then started to use the video facility, have downloaded loads of music and have also ripped the dvd's I own ( no infringment of copyright here! )and then compressed them down in file size to play on the iPod. So, very versatile, and as I use a MAc anyway, I can sync it to my calendars, play games , watch video and films, as well as having my entire music collection on hand when I'm in the car. I seems to have rather strange earholes, which never ever accept the usual market standards earphones, as they are too big to fit in my ears. Therefore, I have to buy the smaller in ear headphones - and bought the Apple Ear Buds. However, I do think the standard ones supplied by Apple are good quality - better than a lot of other tat out there that you get as standard.

I listen to it at work, when i'm out for a stroll, round shops everywhere. If you're going to buy a set of speakers for yours plump up the extra few quid and buy the ISymphony M1, it's a smark little hi-fi, with CD, radio, card reader and dock for any generation of pod, they're very cool...

Then I go to an appliance store and look for a good mp3 player. My choices are sony, zune and iPod. Sony mp3 players looks strange. I was attracted to the ipod nano, its really cute, very thin, nice design ,but it has a lower memory. Then I saw the 30 gb, I was surprised because it was so thin compared to the previous generations of ipod and it has a bigger screen. I buy it with no hesitation, even thou it is expensive. I realize that the price is worthy for its features. You can store videos, photos and aac files that are better than mp3. The screen is very good, with an excellent display. It's display is better than my cellphone. The earphone is very light in weight and excellent. Don't get me wrong, I love my ipod. I am so glad I bought it and I carry it everywhere! But their are a just few things that I feel people should know before they buy. 1)It looks great! Yes it does! but within 2mins being out of the box it looks like you've played footy with it on a pile of gravel. 2)I felt the instructions that came with the Ipod a bit unhelpful (I haven't got a degree in IT!!) Its best to find a friend whose already has one. 3)The ipod leather case make it feel like a brick in your pocket. 4)Itunes is a pain in the rear end if your not conected to the net (Labeling Music takes forever!! 5)Putting video and photo's on my ipod has been such a mission for me. So much so Ive just given up on it. 6)It doesnt have alot of games, and you have to pay apple if you want more than 4. My advice to anyone thinking of buying one is that its their are alot of good Mobile Phone's with MP3, Camera, Games, and FM Radio. So look at why you need a Ipod first before you splash out your hard earned cash!

I like this machine, make no mistake. However it has its flaws. The battery is supposed, per Apple, to last 18 hours - not a chance in hell! Even with the screen illumination set to go off after 2 secs, the most I can extract from it is 5 hours. Sometimes the selection wheel can freeze - it's almost as if the ipod becomes confused - which would make two of us! The headphones are quite flimsy and the sound quality could be better or a little more powerful. You also have to take care of it because, unlike my old Shuffle, it is quite delicate. I also think, for €339, that Apple might have included a charger and an FM radio. Having said all that I love it and it does look great!

This has to be one of the best out there, everybody knows how to use a ipod and if they dont, well its not very difficult to learn how! it has a great screen for playing movies although it gets scratched too easiily! Another fault that i have found is that if you are listening to a song and someone else is using a phone the controls go crazy, like the volume or the part of the song. other than that, i think that the ipod is beter than any other mp3 player out there. You hear the people who say "I have this new Creative Zen and it is sooooo much better than an ipod because it plays different types of songs like wma and......" well everybody knows that an ipod is the most famous and when someone is talking about an mp3 player, an ipod is not considered one! it is an mp3 player, or an ipod!! so lets faace it, the ipod is the best all rounder and beats everything else in most aspects but most of all the way it looks and its user friendly system.

I'm on the road a lot and this was better then an sattlelite radio. It has frozen up and I can even turn it off (yes I know about the hold button and about holding the MENU and Play buttons down for 10 seconds). Neither my computer nor ITUNES will recognize the IPOD. I am using this from around a year now ! To start with ipod has excellent sound quality much superior to Sony walkman tech. But downside is battery / energy use. This support Video playback but in restricted mp4 format. Also though itunes is a good software but not the best to run on windows platform (even on my 64-bit XP edition. It can get a 4star rating if apple can reduce the market price (RRP) to around GBP 150 and do some improvements in power dept.

Best player ever. These guys who are saying that the video's poor must just be loosing their eyesight! It's as clear as day, sharp enough too, and you can see the screen clearly even in the extreme dark or light. Sound quality's great, nothing to complain about :)

'Wow' is all I can say. Brilliant mp3 player with the added bonus of video playing and storing photos. I must say that the video quality is fab, as long as you only watch podcasts or music videos. Episodes and DVDs are too long for such a small screen! The photo storage is great - I can show off my pics to all my friends!

I've had my iPod for almost a year now and there isn't much I can fault this amazing mp3 player. The click wheel is extremly easy and more convineient to use, much simpler than the Creative players. 30Gb is enough for the average music lover and the sound quality is very good as well. As long as you manage the battery power carefully you can make sure your iPod will not fail you on those crucial long journeys (my iPod surivived my 26 hour coach journey) the only thing I wil say though is it'd better if the iPod could play more video formats and I'd reccoment a case as well cause my one is rather scratched now!

What to say guys? I'm astounded by the quality that this thing offers. Earlier i had an ipod mini 2nd Generation and now bought this. The sound quality has improved very much. iPod mini as well as other ipods were criticized for their inability to offer best Bass. But this has been corrected in this version. The Colour display is sharp and nice. Interface is the same. I had a problem with the click wheel. I was so used to the ipod mini click wheel that i couldn't locate buttons of this model i the dark because the size has been reduced. I kept pressing the lower edge of the screen instead of pressing the menu button. For the first time we are offered a key protected screen lock. The GUI for entering your pass key is really nice with the brushed metal style of mac softwares. I must say that the games have not improved. I think it is time for apple to change the games or modify them. Same ol' games. Boring!!! Another important thing is that data transfer through fireWire is not supported any longer. Yet you can charge iPod using firewire cables. The case they are supplying with the package is really nice. video function is very much limited to only a few almost rare file formats. MPG files take too long to be converted into MP4 files (Using Quick Time Pro). You have to buy Quick Time Pro or other third party softwares to convert your ordinary video files into iPod compatible videos. I've given it 5 stars because it is not a video ipod but an iPod with video capabilities. As an mp3 player iPod Rules!!!!

Well what can you say about the latest batch of iPods? It's incredible to comprehend how many songs these gadgets can hold and i must say i have been very impressed by all the features of the latest generation. I've had mine for just over 7mths now and almost every spare moment i get, i listen to it! Altho i feet it's important to warn some potential buyers of some of the shortcomings...I find it's prone to freezing. It can also become really slow when trying to flick thru songs and playlists. Also, i dont care what anyone says, but the battery life is a joke! The first few times it went the distance, but otherwise i need to charge it almost everyday. Playing videos and games (altho the games are junk) eats up the power big time. I even tried completely turning off the backlight to conserve energy but it hasnt made much of a difference. Unless u leave it playing without any interference, expect regular charging. The last major concern is that ive lost all my music on it 3x in the past. I add my music manually as i have music on a number of computers. It is a big frustration having to add thousands of songs back on 3 times over so be careful to backup all ur music! Despite all the problems ive mentioned, i still think it's an awesome media player. For what you get and all the add-ons for it available on the market, it's difficult to go past it. Highly recommend!

I've had this iPod for 8 months and have had no problems. the screen is very large and the body is very slim. Other hard disk players are trying to compete with this one, but they don't have the same extra stylish form like this. The only downside is that you do get many scratches on it. I am a very rough user, but it should'nt really scratch this much. Anyway, you so get used to the scratches after a while. I have not yet faced any battery problems. I would recommend this mp3 player to anyone who loves music and also wouldn't mind a couple of short films or music videos to go with it
