Apple iPod Nano Review

Rating:
Date: 01/07/2006
The Ipod Nano takes the key features of the Ipod and shrinks them into a tiny package, available in 1GB (240 songs), 2GB (500 songs) and 4GB (1,000 songs) models. The iPod nano is pencil-thin and will fit into your pocket (although carrying it in your pocket may lead to breakage - see below!) The Nano features the ever-popular clickwheel and friendly user interface of its big brother, with the benefit of a colour screen. The touch-sensitive clickwheel lets you easily fast-forward, rewind, play, pause or access menus. It's a very easy MP3 player to operate.

The iTunes software that accompanies the iPod Nano provides an easy way to create and manage your digital music collection on a PC or Mac. With iTunes you can transfer music from an audio CD into digital format. iTunes supports a range of formats including MP3 and AAC and you can control the quality/compression level. The Apple Lossless encoder provides a sound quality that is indistinguishable from the original.

The Ipod Nano supports a wide range of music formats, including MP3 and AAC. Music in AAC format can be compressed smaller than the MP3 format with the same quality, so is better for storing digital music. The quality of the music depends on the compression factor - the greater the compression, the lower the quality. The iPod Nano supports compression rates from 16 to 320 Kbps (the same as the Ipod 20GB). In addition the iPod supports the Apple Lossless format, as well as WAV and AIFF.

The Nano also has the capability of storing and displaying photos on its colour screen.

Battery life is similar to the big iPod, with up to 14 hours of continuous play, and a recharge time of 3 hours. This is pretty good for such a small device.

The iPod Nano really is an outstanding technical achievement. Packing this much MP3 player into such a small device is awe-inspiring. 4GB of memory may not be enough for all users, but that's what the bigger iPods are for! For typical users on the move, the trade off of memory versus size & weight seems like a good one. You should be aware that LCD screens on devices this thin are fragile, and you should treat your Nano with care! Putting it into a back pocket may not be a smart move if you accidentally sit on it. The Nano is also very prone to scratching, and you either accept that it will get scratched or you buy a case for it before you start using it. You should also regard the Nano as a device that may need replacing after a year - our user reviews below show that it isn't a durable piece of technology, although it seems to be more durable than the 4th Generation iPod. Apple themselves point out that the rechargeable batteries used in the iPod have a finite lifespan. As long as you have realistic expectations of what the iPod can do (and what it can't) you shouldn't be disappointed. The first generation Nano has now been replaced by the 2nd generation Nano.

Features of the Apple iPod Nano include:

  • Supported formats: AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Music Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3 and 4), Apple Lossless, WAV, AIFF
  • Photo viewing: JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, PSD (Mac only) and PNG formats
  • Frequency response: 20Hz to 20,000Hz
  • Battery life: 14 hours (3 hours to recharge)
  • LCD display: 176 x 132 pixels with blue-white LED backlight
  • iTunes software for managing your digital music collection on a PC or Mac
  • Connectivity: USB (cable included)
  • Earbud-style headphones included
  • Size: 90 x 40 x 6.9 mm
  • Weight: 42g

You are ALL wrong. Yes the ipod is a superb piece of engineering, no doubt. However, its not. They are soo unreliable. I work at Dixons and can guarentee that it wont last longer that a year an a half. The battery will go, and ipod will charge £60, that is if the poor electrics last till then. I was at first sceptic about the poor reviews, bought 1 maself infact, but seein the numberof returns we have processed, i would reccommend dont bother

I have this ipod since December 2005, use it EVERY DAY and it's still PERFECT!!! Right from the beggining I was careful with the scratching, always used it with a protection, so it still is very presentable, the battery still lasts me up to 5 days, and have not had one single problem with it. The only change in it were the phones, but always the apple ones.

I've had my ipod since christmas 2005 and so far have had no problems with it. I have a white one, although it scratched quite easily so i have a case for it. The battery was enough to last me a 24 hour drive to austria. I reccomend buying an ipod dock as it is quite annoying plugging it in to charge at the computer. It is great and can hold 500 songs which is far more than i need . It is great and the 2nd generation are even better so buy it!

It's really good and it allways seems to amaze me how much stuff you can put on it together with itunes!! i've got 400 song and 800+ photo's on my 2GB one and there is still room left!! The only thing which annoyed me is the little protection case thing it comes with (the white/black one) doesnt protect the little opening where you stick your usb thing in... u have to turn the iPod upside down to have it protected from scratches and that way the little opening is vulnerable.. It's Vair vair annoying!!

The only thing about it is that it is easily scratchable so i recomment a case and its battery dusnt last very long either.

By far an outstanding music player! What can I say? Sound quality (and the volume it goes up to) is fantastic, it has decent headphones, stores enough songs (mines 4gb and stores a huge amount of songs, at the moment i have 456 on mine), has extras like games, and uploading songs to it is a doddle. Ive had my white one a year. Its been amazing and a life saver. One thing though - they are easy to scratch so make sure you have a cover for it! You can get fab rubber covers in bright colours which look ace). They also fit in your pocket perfectly as they are just the right size. And the price is great for what you get. I love mine, and Id reccomend it to anyone wanting a decent music player.

Apple have scored with the iPod because of the interface. This is good and easy to use. The actual device is really pretty poor though, and then the software to get songs onto it...! The Nano cannot be used without a case so that lovely look must be hidden immediately or is quickly ruined. It cannot be used simply to copy mp3 files onto it, music MUST be copied onto the Nano using Apple's proprietry iTunes software. It won't charge when connected to the USB port, unless disk usage is enabled, iTunes is closed down and Windows Explorer is used to eject the drive. It doesn't tell you when it's fully charged. Battery life is very poor if you do anything other than let the music play, it has let me down many many times. I have a first gen Nano which had a claimed battery life of 12-14 hours. I get 6-7 hours in reality. Perhaps the new one (claimed life 25 hours!) will give a more acceptable 12-13 hours. iTunes seems to be updated every month. Surely this software must be approaching a stable and mature product. No, still fundamental problems remain with iTunes: it doesn't properly recognise the devise which must often be plugged in to several USB ports before it is found by iTunes. iTunes doesn't seem to like to deal with more than one Nano on a single PC. It hangs repeatedly for many minutes. Try to select a few hundred tracks and you'll quickly realise that it can't deal with this and will reset your selection. What do the ticks against each track mean? Perhaps it shows which tracks you have loaded onto the Nano. Why then do those that are ticked change when I plug my Shuffle in? What does it mean when I have both Nano and Shuffle plugged in? It goes on. The headphones supplied are pretty poor, I ordered a black Nano, and the phones in the box were white!!! I quickly replaced them with a decent pair or Sennheisers which make the Nano sound really quite good. Why do Apple do this and let the whole package down with poor overall sound? The Nano is overpriced and there are many mp3 players that better it.

I've had my white ipod nano for nearly a year now and I love it! I bought a case for it as soon as I got it, and its still unscratched so I'd recommend buying a case or at least using the little sleeve that comes in the box. Its really easy to use and the sound quality is excellent. I've got the 4GB one, and I've got around 900 songs on it so thats not too bad. The battery life is ok, I normally use it when I'm travelling to and from college and I normally charge it once a week, I can get around 10/11 hours out of a single charge. But I keep the backlight off and I dont tend to skip songs, the battery life decreases quite a lot if you use the backlight & skip songs a lot. Overall I think the nano is great! I think the white one looks nicer, but the second gen nanos come in different colours now. If you don't already have an Ipod Nano, go and buy one definitely!!

In All Honesty I'm Dissapointed In My Ipod Nano. I Am On My 4th Ipod (All Have Broken Down Due To Internal Faults). First I Had An Ipod Shuffle Which Broke And I Sent It Back To The Mac Shop And It Was Fixed. Second Time It Broke I Sent It Away Again And They Sent It Back Saying It Coudn't Be Fixed. I Had To Badger Them Before Getting A Replacment. Then I Had A Ipod Nano (The 1st One) That To Was Sent Away Twice. I Eventually Got Another Replacement. (The 2nd One) And This Again Was Sent Away Twice. The Second Time They Wouldn't Replace It Because Of A 'Questionable Dent' It Took The 'Experts' As They Call Themselves 3 Months To Determain The Fact (From Looking At Photos) That They Wouldn't Replace It Because I Of This Minor Dent. I Tried To Explain To Them That It Wasn't The Dent Because It Had Worked 7 Months With This Dent. But They Wern't Interested. I Thought I'd Give Them Another Chance, (The 3rd One) I Went And Bought Another Nano, And This Time Boungt I Hard Plastic C ase To Stop Denting And Scratching. The Hold Button Got Stuck In The On Position On This One. We've Taken it Back To The Shop And I Am Current;y Waiting On My Replacment (The 4th One). I Am By No Means Rough With My Ipod, I Keep It In A Hard Plastic Case To Prevent Dents And Scratches. Because It Is So Fragile I Am Extra Careful With It. The Product Overall Is A Dissapointment. It Scratches Easy, Marks And Breaks Down. Frequently. I Would Never Recommend This Unreliable Product To Anyone. It Is Probably Worth $40 Instead Of The $299 Your CHarged For It.

Ok unless you get a casr or skin it will scratch, but if your going to spend £140 on a mp3 then a few more pounds to keep it clean and scratch free is worth the money. I tend to just transfer my cds onto it, but I have read that people have had itunes hack into internet history and pass details onto third party sites? have these people not heard of internet security. So to sumerise this little black gadget is BRILLIANT WONDERFUL AND GREAT, if you want fuctionality with style buy it. Plus its a name you can really on.

Now & then it doesnt turn on. And comes on to a configuration screen, which does not switch on untill you plug it in. I have a white one, and have the protecxter tubes. It is important you get them else the nano will be really scratched. Over all good product, recommended buy. If i was to choose again maybe i would of chosen the Mini Ipod instead.

I had a black, 2 gb iPod Nano and i loved it for about a week then the novelty started to wear off. The iPod scratched like i dont know what and the thing froze and i couldnt do anything with it. Then i realised how to unfreeze it so it was ok. Also when i plugged it into my computer it crashed it on several occasions. iTunes was a load of crud aswell. It would hack, yes HACK into my viewed webpages and send them to 3rd party companies? eh? Whats up with that? I had to buy a new pair of earbus after two weeks because the plug was hanging off and if your song had too much bass in it the left ear would soung awful and then go really quiet. CHEAP CRUD? Not a £30. £30 for a pear of rubbish cheap earbuds that break within a week. My battery broke too. And yes i did give it the full charge and never took it of before it was done. I never got a charger either? eh? So you have to switch your PC on for hours just to charge a cheap flimsy cruddy thing. Stick with the iRiver at least you can change the battery yourself eisaly if it breaks.

Overall I must say I am completely impressed... The Nano far surpassed my expectations of what it could do. I figured "Ah it can't hold that much, can it?" WRONG WAS I. 4 audio books, and another 320 songs (Average MP3 Compression) later, I still have room to go. Sure, I've never been a fan of the glidewheel, but it does the job just fine. My only serious concern (And not even a complaint) is that the battery life drained a little too quickly. It's not unexpected, but just a little too short for my liking. Otherwise, the Nano is a go for anyone that doesn't need 30gb of music, needs a tiny package and loves that streamline Apple feel. I say go for it.

I cant say any more that I love it. I was a bit annoyed about the lack of FM Radio, but I have the inline remote that doubles as an FM Tuner, and so kills two birds with the one stone. For all the people giving off about it not having huge memory.... Well, thats what a big iPod is for, and to be honest, my experience is that no matter how long you are stuck on the tube, you will not get through all 350 odd songs. So if you want a larger portable library, then its pretty obvious from the outset that the Mini is more suited to you. One nigly point... Scratches. Boy does it scratch! I left it a bit too late to get the clear silicone peel on covers, but they do they job to a degree. Just be careful with it, and invest in a good case (even the Tubes arent good enough, I have a pink one but it doesnt protect the screen.) The Nano Rocks!

Worst is the NEED to install software (iTunes) to load it up, it's very annoying and especially for a Linux user about as usefull as a refrigerator on the North Pole. And compared to even the simplest mp3 players it is missing quite some options like a FM radio or (voice) recorder. I'm afraid it's more of a fashion/life style statement then a full featured personal music device. For the price (~160 Euro's) I'd never buy one.

i think this small, cute yet practical piece of technology is a must have!! its so handy to have tons of songs with you all of the time, and i totaly disagree if anyone says they need bigger storage space for one persons collection of songs, becuase by the time you need more songs on your i-pod al lot will have gone out of fashion therefore you wil lbe able to take them off to free up space. The picture space is just so convenient also....when i went away with my college i put loads of picture on my i-pod to remind me of home instead of carrying pictures with me and loosing them (very practical!!) i also took the plastic cover off when i first got my i-pod (not the best of ideas) but i've had my i-pod around 7 months now and it has not got one scratch on the scrren, and i am not the most careful girl in the world with nay of my belongings so its not up to me looking after it (its been thrown downstairs during fights, fell off my bed when i've slept listening to it, my kitten has palyed with it whilst i have been out etc) yet it is all still very smart!! i must admit though the back of the i-pod is a little bit scratched and does collect fignerprints easily, therefore i have put a nano case on it, these cases are pretty rubbish though as they do not contain a screen cvoer. overall the nano is brill and id recomend anyone to get one!!

I've had my nano since Christmas. I had heard all the scary reports of people snapping their pods and cracking their screens etc so I was a bit apprehensive. First of all, if you plan to store thousands of songs then the nano isn't for you. The first thing I would suggest to everyone buying the nano is don't remove the plastic film covering the front. I've left mine on so I have no scratches at all and the click wheel is still easy to operate. Secondly, invest in a proper case. I purchased a black case by Incase and because it took a few weeks to deliver, I did not carry my ipod out of the house until I had it well protected. I also like the fact that I can wear my ipod around my neck on the lanyard headphones I bought, but beware...the lanyard doesn't fit if you buy the case I purchased so I have to switch to the case the nano came with when using lanyard. The other day, my pod fell off a table about 2feet high onto a tiled floor. It was in the case. Nothing happened to it. I've read reviews with people complaining that they put their nano's in their back pockets and broke their pods. My suggestion to those of you deciding whether or not the nano is the player for you is that you don't place it in your back pocket! Probably isn't a good idea to put any type of gadget in your back pocket, but that's just my opinion. My only complaint is that the click wheel is not backlit on any of the new pods (The nano is my first MP3 player so I can't speak for any other). Which is silly in my opinion. I can't understand why Apple didn't think of that.

I agree with Nikolai Almeida's review completely. I've had my nano since October 2005 and I have had no problems. I spent over $300 on mine and accessories. I decided that since I was parting with what I considered a small gold mine, that it was well worth spending that bit extra to ensure it was well protected. I do understand that people who have had problems with screens cracking for no apparent reason deserve to be annoyed, I would be too. And yes if that is the case then absolutely their pod should be changed...not repaired, changed. However, when I read that some one is complaining because they put their nano in their back pocket and then -surprise surprise- it broke because they sat on it, I have to question their level of intelligence. Look how thin it is, of course it will break! And with all the pouches, cases and what not available you have no reason to treat it so badly! Would you put a china vase on the edge of a shelf and blame the company who manufactured it when it falls off? Of course not! I'm not trying to convince or deter anyone from buying the ipod nano. I'm just trying to say if you can afford to spend money on ANY gadget then look after it properly. Surely that can't be too hard?

Now I can download what playlist I want, it's easier to choose the music that matches my mood. True, I've found that the screen can scratch easily, but I bought a leather case to protect it. Even with the case it is tiny and weighs nothing, I can put it in my pocket and not know it's there. I've owned an ipod mini and I've got the 20gb version and this is by far the best ipod I've had. People are always complaining about the iPod nano's saying that: they scratch easily. the screens break easily. they are fiddly to use. the batteries run out after 50 recharges. Bear in mind that I do have a nano, so I do know what I'm talking about! Scratches on the iPod nano in white aren't as easily seen as on the black. Plus if you care so much about the scratches BUY A PROTECTIVE SILICON SKIN before you get it or take it out of the box. If you can't be bothered to, then you deserve every single scratch on your nano. The screens are said to break easily...if you take care of it then the screen won't break. For crying out loud, the reason the nano is so thin is because there is no reinforcement on the screen, so don't: drop it. press on the screen very hard. throw it. stomp, smash, hammer or in some cases, spill water on it and 'wipe' it off using force! If you are also concerned about the screen scratching then get a screen protector, these can cost about £1. They stop scratches, but do not stop the screen from breaking. The nano is not fiddly to use because the CLICKWHEEL is touch sensitive. This means that no matter how big your fingers are it will still work very well. The batteries DO NOT stop working after 50 battery recharges. The reason people say this is because they messed up the batteries. Sometimes when you charge the batteries you may disconnect the charger to see how full the battery is. DON'T DO THIS...the battery has a memory that tells it how long it can charge for. For arguments sake let's say that the memory said 2 hours for a full charge. If you unplug it after 1h 55mins then you rewrite the memory, so that when you reconnect the charger the nano says that it is full, when it is not. If you keep doing this then the time limit before the nano says 'FULL' gets shorter and shorter and so does the amount of hours the batteries can be used for, before they run out. You effectively ruin your nano by doing this. There is one way of trying to recover SOME of the batteries full potential. Keep it charging for about 5-10mins after the full sign comes on. DO NOT unplug it during this time. Other causes of the battery life shortening are: Overcharging for about 15 minutes plus. Undercharging (already explained above). Not fully charging the first time (the instructions that come with the nano say this). ALWAYS read the little booklets and instruction manuals inside out making sure you haven't missed anything. If you don't read the manuals you will ruin your iPod nano permanently. £130+ ($200+) down the drain. It's that simple. Please take my advice, and if anyone contradicts this explanation, and says that the nano is rubbish for any of these reasons: they scratch easily. the screens break easily. they are fiddly to use. the batteries run out after 50 recharges. then can you please punch them in the face...Thank You!

I love my iPOD NANO more than anything else! It's sleek design is what made me buy it, and I am a proud iPOD owner now! Having never experienced previous iPODs, I found the clickwheel very easy to use. The 2GB (500 songs) is enough for me but note that it also comes in 1GB and 4GB models. The battery life isnt great, 14hours, but lasts about 8 hours if you are constantly turning the wheel or playing games/ viewing photos. The cons are that the nano scratches way too easily, battery life and Itunes is kinda confusing but still easy. I highly reccomend a nano for anybody who enjoys music.

This thing is like really small. I agree with the others , obviously you cant expect it to be a rock , if you throw it around, you will break it. A cover is enough to keep the scratches away. Sound quality is awesome. I also have the integrated lanyard earphones which allows you to wear the ipod .. its really cool , you dont get messed up by the wires and stuff. The price is right for this kinda stuff.

basic instructions. ignore what all the opinionated and viewably biased "professional" reviewers point out. i have four in my household, and not one problem has occured during my time with them. the great little machine pumps out fantastic bass and even low bitrate music still offers happy hearing (i recommend you stick with the standard ipod headphones supplied, as these are the just about the best).. the LCD screen is crisp and bright, and the click wheel just is fascinating, with not a wheel exactly but a touch sensitive unit, it is a joy to play with. none of the gimmicks look gimmicky in thereselves because of the Nano's gorgeous profile, and no effort is needed to get jealous expressions from passers by. I could go on about these points, but lets skip to the best area. its array of features. you've got a photo viewer, slideshow play, calendar, alarms, arcade games, contact storage, podcasts, notes, stopwatch, new screen lock, and a clock that tells the time in every single region and country in the world. and that's just a few examples. pretty good battery life, fantastic sound, feature packed, great screen, click wheel, sexy, sexy profile! al of this sums up a perfect machine. a few glitches with iTunes, but is probably due to corrupted XP pro! the casing is easy to smudge, and it only charges through the USB ( don't worry though for around a tenner each you can find AC chargers for it, and a host of other gadgets). but these are only minor drawbacks from such a fantastic product. go 4GB, better value.
