Has your ipod died? Frozen? Thanks to Nicola from the UK, a lot of people on here have managed to fix the problem, and have been very grateful to this woman. THANK YOU Nicola, for you saved my ipod too! So in case you missed her review, I just want to RE-inform what Nicola said. So here's what you do when your ipod dies. Tap it sharply on each corner, and then hold down MENU and the middle button for 11 seconds. The apple will appear on the screen, and everything should be back to normal! The reason for this is apparently because the ipod gets bashed around in your bag, for example. Mine has just shut down twice, but this solution certainly proves very handy for the the time being; I will however advise you to think carefully before you spend loads of money on an ipod, because as you can see, a lot of people have had problems with them and have had bad customer service treatment, and the ipods appear to be unreliable, so beware. I've only had my ipod for about a month, and clearly it is already playing up, as of tonight. And this is already my second ipod because the last one got nicked! Having said all this, the ipod deserves an excellent rating all the same, I absolutely adore mine and don't know what I'd do without it! Is like a part of me! But just look after them guys, and hope that tip helps! Love to all! Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Roger on 05/10/2006 My first (brand new) Ipod failed after about six months. Replaced by Apple free of charge - after a bit of a tussle with a call centre (in India, I think). However, the replaement failed after six months. Drive was just turning itself on and off constantly - various failure signs showing at different intervals. Took it to the Apple Store in Bluewater. Very helpful guy on the Genius Bar told me it was an ex-Ipod. Fortunately I didn't have my wallet on me otherwise I was going to get another model. I then found this site and Nicola's advice below. Gave my Ipod a firm tap on each corner and - wheyheeeeeeeeee - its come back to life again. No problems over last couple of weeks! Nicola: your are indeed a genuius. I rang the Ipod store to tell them - they were surprised to say the least. Clearly, the tap on the corner treatment is like having defibliration treatment. It isn't colour. You cannot put photos on it. And you cannot watch music videos. I've had this ipod for about 2 1/2 years, and still the music quality is excellent!! Though, occaisionally my buttons will play up and not work correctly, which is not acceptable, as it costed over $500 when i got it. With an ipod you will probably use itunes which isn't a very prgramm, it's confusing and hard to use, plus a important note: check to see if itunes is avalible in your country! (I worked my way around this problem though, as we don't have itunes here) Another great thing is you can get heaps of great accesories for these ipods, infact all the ipods ;). You can get skins, stereos (Ipod Hi-Fi is awesome! and can fit any ipod), headphone splitters, hard covers, arm bands, FM transmitters, ipod socks, ibeam, voice recorders, podtender (a drink mixing programm (who comes up with this stuff!??)), podgourmet, bibleplayer (yes, its real!) , solar charges, remotes. Plus you can podcast. All in all, it is a good quality mp3 player, which is quite robust (i've dropped it twice and it didn't even mark). There is a chance you may have problems, but the sound is very clear and crisp, plus the menu makes it easy to work. Recommended. I took it to apple who were just blatently rude and told me I had to spend a whole day booking an appointment and going to see them only for them to send it back for a costly repair. My dad read your review and tried it, a sharp knock whilst wrapped in newspaper so it wouldn't damage it, on all courners. Now it works again. THANK YOU. I guess the hard-drive had come off of the spindle or something (very technical :D) and that just put it right. Just to let you know I love my ipod, it goes everywhere with me, and no other mp3 player is as stylish or easy to use, but Apple, your service is shocking and I will be buying nothing else from you again. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by nige on 30/05/2006 Have used apple computers professionally for years - great products but generally disappointed by the aftersales care. Absolutely loved the my ipod for the first year and a few months, until it started freezing. At first it would respond to the reset command, but then had to do it more frequently. Sure enough, it froze completely and although I have spent hours trying all the suggested fixes I could find online, nothing worked. Took it to local repair centre who said it would need new hard drive, at an exhorbitant cost - almost as much as a new ipod, but it would only have a few months warranty!!!!! In other words apple are telling you to go out and buy a new one. I feel now I'm trapped because all my music on itunes which doesn't seem compatible with other mp3 players and i have a set of expensive Bose speakers which only work with ipods. Before anyone thinks i have been careless or abused my ipod, I must just mention that it was extremely carefully looked after, sparingly u sed never left the house, never banged around and it is in immaculate condition. To say I'm hacked off is an understatement. A quick look on the internet seems to support my thoughts that there are fundamental quality problems with ipods as the same problems crop up over and over again. Apple have been very successful at keeping a lid on it and are happy enough to take your money but have no interest in customer satisfaction. They should either improve quality or improve length of warranty - or make it clear that these expensive products have a pretty limited shelf life. To my mind it's taking money under false pretenses. SHAME ON YOU APPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Jodiephine on 04/05/2006 I have had my iPod since June last year and it has just been sent off for its third repair, it regularly freezes and the battery doesn't last for one day. After the second repair apple sent me a new iPod, but it hasn't even lasted a month!! also i'd like to comment on apple's poor customer service, it took them over a month, and many many frustratingly long phone calls, to deliver it to my address! Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Jenna on 21/04/2006 Ive had my ipod since last summer now and during that time it has frozen three times while ive been using it. This problem is very annoying as for it to work again it needs to be plugged into the mains and then hold two buttons down, this is therfore not ideal if you are out for the day and do not have a charger. However this problem is not due to the reason that the battery is low as it says it is full and it was not long chargered. If i had my choice again now i would go for an ipod nano instead. As this has happened to me numerous times, i have realised that all you out there with no insurance, there is hope!! By giving the ipod a sharp tap on each side and resetting, (menu and centre for 11 seconds) it should come back on! ipods are a brilliant idea and i couldnt live without mine, but you would think considering the price u have to pay, apple would try to fix this problem! It seems that everyone who has had a bad experience with an iPod have come out of the woodwork to make a noise. Please don't make the mistake of failing to own one because of them. I would imagine they didn't look after their iPod and so wonder why it doesn't perform as expected. If you look after the equipment, the equipment will look after you. The first one was the 3rd generation. I got it because my cousin had one. Well he intentionally cut a wire inside the ipod to get the new 4th generation for free because he was still on the warrenty. I was still on my warrenty too so i did the same thing and got the 4th generation for free (before that I dropped my ipod the front face shifted over and it was uneven). Now that the 5th generation is out and im not on the warrenty i plan on selling my 4th geneartion and get a new one. The problems i had with my 4th is it was slow to change songs and once there was no music on it and i had to put the all back on which was annoying. My friend has said his screen freezed and he had to get a new one. Besides this their awesome! Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Morven on 07/02/2006 Thought this was wonderful when I bought it in August 2004 for £220 UK pounds - after 11 months it failed, one month inside its warranty period. The screen showed it flipping constantly from track to track and no sound. It had frozen in some odd way. Apple collected it and delivered the replacement. Nice service, huh? Only no .... The replacement did exactly the same thing 3 months later. Took it to the Apple shop on Regent St London where they diagnosed heart-failure, would not honour a year's warranty applying to the replacement product [which apparently only had a three month warranty just expired] and claimed that the PURCHASE is warranted, not the PRODUCT. And now they want £169.00 [yes, folks, you can buy a new one for £179.00] to repair it. So I'm afraid that what Apple have produced is a DISPOSABLE SHORT-LIFE PRODUCT, hoping that when you are hooked you will replace it at any price. Not me. Stuff it, Apple. You are rob-dogs. Remember IBM pc's? Dominated production, controlled the market, then had some competition, and now don't make their rubbish pc's any more? Watch this space ... Apple, your fans do not like being manipulated or abused. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Nathan Clough on 06/02/2006 This is an overhyped, mass produced, over priced piece of engineering. I've had it for 7 months now, it's still on it's one year warranty so I'll send it to get fixed. This mp3 player is little more than just an mp3 player - No extras, well, just games and they're the sort of games you'll get in the 'Snake 2' days. Plus, any extras you do buy cost way too much. I'd avoid buying one of these if I was you, I sure regret it £250 worse off!! I would recommend a Creative mp3 player, NOT an iRiver tho. ;) Hope I've helped change you mind about Apple!! :) Rating: ![]() Reviewed by michael from usa on 24/01/2006 this is simply the best mp3 player there is. it has great storage, great sound quality, good battery life and isn't the typical clunky, geeky, mp3 player we are used to. i have heard many people say "my ipod has died on me after a year!" i have had no problems with my ipod suddenly not working. i have had it since feb. 2005 and love it. BUT if u aren't a serious music lover go with the mini. most people wont actually listen to 5000 songs. but if u have lots of cds to put on ur pod the go with teh 20 gb. It is very durable and im not sure why they have even added the "on the go" playlist. when playing a song from a regular playlist i can toss my ipod, spin it, and run with it and it hasn't skipped yet. the ipod is unbeatable. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Mark Smith on 20/01/2006 A great MP3 player all in all, and i'm really pleased i got one. However, there are a few drawbacks. 1. The back of the Ipod get so scratched so easily its untrue. A case is a must! Haven't had it a year yet so cant comment about the mentioned battery failure. Another annoyance is iTunes... i find it incredibly irritating and non-user-friendly, and i'm an experienced computer user. Adding and removing music is fine once you get the hang of it... but to start with its incredibly difficult. But all of this is definitely outweighed by how amazing the actaul Ipod is! I love the fact that i can create a playlist for the gym or in the car in minutes. My friend has a Packard Bell Mp3, and he was amazed when i showed him how easy it is. Other great features include album art, which i think looks great. However, if you get one, for goodness sake buy a set of Sony or equivalent headphones. The supplied ones are good for about a week, and then they either break or produce poor quality sound. After speaking to other Ipod owners, everyone seems to agree that they are poor. Overall, buy one. The advantages outweigh the annoyances by miles. At first i thought that even max volume was too quiet but i changed that by turning off sound-check on settings. The reasons i only gave it 4 stars is because of its sheer size and bulkiness especially with an iSkin. and also because when i first got it and hadn't got and iSkin, i kept my iPod in a fluffy sock and it still managed to get scratched! so thats a bit annoying. Also the range of iSkins available for the 20 gig is not that great and i found it very hard to find the pink one i have now. Generally, im still very pleased with it. I have an I-Pod mini and that has the same, clear sound as the I-Pod does and it hasn't yet broken or had a fault. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reviewed by Ivo from TheNetherlands on 06/05/2005 I started a couple of years ago with, then the newest, MP3 player, it had a 20gig hd and it was a Creative Jukebox 2 (for that time 2002 it was the best mp3 player money could buy I paid around 400 guilders for it then (that's about 190 euro's)). Unfortunately de hd broke down after 1,5 years of usage. The player was well insured and I bought another player. I had to choose between the iPod and the iRiver. Both players have a 20gig hd. I knew what I wanted in a player because I owned one earlier and had made my mind up before looking for another one. Everybody says iPod is the smallest player and I can't say that they are wrong, but when I compare the two players (my brother has a iPod) they don't differ that much. de iRiver is sleaker but just one or two mm thicker than an iPod. But here come the differences: iRiver has a build in microphone (great for making practical jokes, or recording classes); iRiver has more Ram memory, works quicker, has optical and line in/out + head phones connector. iRiver has a remote control with clear screen. And last but not least the "joy-stick" on the iRiver performs way better than the "touchpad" of the iPod. One thing that's very handy for people who don't use their mp3 player just for music, when connected to a computer the iRiver is seen as a removable HD, when running WindowsXP you don't even have to install a driver, and you can put all sorts of data on it not just music, this is a big difference with the iPod. Packaging is also a big difference. Well I don't know exactly if they have changed anything but when I had to choose (around summer 2004) iRiver had the most extra's plus outperformed de iPod on battery life. It has a 16 hour playback time, when using radio even longer, and a 8 hour realtime mp3- or wav- recording capability. When I bought my player it was around 400 euro's (that's a lot, more than my stereoset) but it still was 60 euro's cheaper than the iPod. One thing I have to say that's very good about the iPod the white body and the silver backside it's very neat!!!! (but heavy). My player has a goldisch color whits aluminium sides and silver buttons, but I don't see the color that often sinds I always have it in the carrying case (that's one thing I've learned from my first player :D) I guess what I'm saying is, don't just look for looks of the player but really focus on what can the player do! If you can make the smallest player in the universe but all you can do is listen to music or you can make a slightly bigger player that can record as well, I know what I would choose and have chosen :D Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Emma from Wales on 27/04/2005 I bought this Ipod a few months ago and am really pleased I bought it as it holds loads of songs.
