Reviewed by Ashley Slater on 07-11-2003 Well, I finally did it, bought an MP3 player. I specifically chose the Acer as it was cheap and it said on the box it would play wma files. Others just said they supported all file types whatever they may mean. I popped the batteries in after some debate as to correct polarity, there is + and - on the battery compartment lid but the warning of damage if I got it wrong slowed me down. Batteries in and on, worked first time, plugged it into my USB socket with the little extension thingy supplied, added some wma files from Windows Media Player 9, disconnected (used stop device icon). Here's the thing, it plays the files brilliantly but getting the damned thing to start playing is a "black art". Switching on is easy, then you press the multi purpose switch to begin playing, nothing happens. Then you try again and push just that little bit too long and it switches off. You try again same result, then again, red light flashes and off it goes. I've just had another attempt and same thing. However it must be said, it is very good once going. I have a problem playing all the files but I am certain is a copy protect function issue with Win Media 9. A few other niggles, the headphone socket ain't that robust. That is going to be it's downfall, maybe it's because I pushed the plug in too far, but I thought that's how far it should go in. How you persuade the equaliser to change settings is also a mystery but it sounds ok so why bother. My conclusion: It does what it says on the box, just. If I had spent more money would I have a better bit of kit who knows, I only wanted it for jogging and the free music file supplied samples from Formula 1 racing certainly upped my pace, but I certainly wouldn't buy another. As a final comment, as a wearer of reading glasses on a cord round my neck, adding the player and the headphones, I got in a bit of a tangle, this is probably young persons technology! Rating:
