Toshiba 32WLT66 ReviewRating: Date: 20-11-2006 The 32WLT66 is currently Toshiba's best-selling LCD television and deservedly so. Not only is it one of the cheapest 32 inch LCD TV's available, but it delivers the goods in every respect, with no real problems to detract from overall performance.
This is a HD Ready TV, and picture quality is excellent. 32 inches is currently the most popular size for LCD TV's because it offers the best price-performance and it's where LCD technology currently excels. With a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels (typical for a 32 inch screen) and a good contrast ratio and brightness rating, the screen fundamentals are all in place for a high quality picture. Toshiba's Active Vision LCD technology drives this HD screen and provides excellent colour and motion rendering - traditionally problem areas for LCD technology. When displaying images from a sub-HD source, 3D digital comb technology and Digital Noise Reduction are used to enhance the image quality. The results of all this technology is a very impressive picture quality, that certainly matches anything in this price range and can compete even with more expensive models. It's a very impressive result for such an inexpensive machine.
The Toshiba has good audio quality to match its picture quality. Sound is provided from twin speakers (20W total power) supporting NICAM stereo and SRS WOW for an enhanced surround sound effect. SRS WOW is a mix of technologies that includes wide stereo imaging (spreading the sound), sound-image elevation (placing the focus of the sound in your head), and TruBass (creating bass that exceeds the limitations of the speakers). In addition, a Bass Boost feature does what its name suggests and lends some welcome bass to the mix.
The "T" in the model name stands for tuner and so the 32WLT66 comes with an integrated Freeview digital tuner that will make the TV futureproof when analogue TV shuts down sometime in the next 5 years. An Electronic Program Guide makes it easy to select the programme that you want to watch. There is a version of this TV that doesn't include the tuner, so if you use another source such as satellite or cable, you could save a few quid by getting the Toshiba 32WL66 instead.
Finally, moving on to the all-important but often overlooked subject of connectivity, we are pleased to report that Toshiba haven't cut corners in this regard. The 32WLT66 includes two HDMI connections. These are the connections that enable HD Ready devices to talk to each other. You'll want one of these for Sky HD and one to connect a a Blu-Ray or HD DVD for all round high definition viewing. even if you don't yet own either of these, it's the way of the future and you'll be glad you bought a TV that included 2 HDMI's. Trust us! In addition, the Toshiba supplies a Component video, S-video, 2 SCART's and a PC-input in addition, so all bases should be covered. If you really want to ensure that you're future proof, then you could consider the new Toshiba 32WLT68 which has 3 HDMI connections, but you'll have to pay a fair bit more for this luxury.
We've awarded the Toshiba 32WLT66 a full 5 stars - something we don't do very often, because it offers unbeatable value for money. We're not the only ones to feel this way - the Tosh has also been given 5 stars by "What Plasma and LCD TV", "What Video and Widescreen TV", "What Home Cinema" and "What Hi-Fi Sound and Vision", and was Editor's Choice in "What HDTV"! Need we say more?
