The Sony V5500 series of LCD TV's launched in the UK in March 2009 and has rapidly established itself as one of Sony's most popular series of TV's. The most popular incarnation is probably the 32 inch KDL-32V5500, priced at around the £650 mark, but the 40 inch KDL-40V5500 and the 46 inch KDL-46V5500 versions are also popular. The 52 inch version, the KDL-V52V5500, priced at around £1300 is probably too expensive for the mainstream market, but the other sizes are all within the budget of mainstream consumers.
The V5500 series replaced the V4000 series, and offers a number of improvements including an extra HDMI socket, taking the total number of HDMI sockets to four. BRAVIA Engine 3 delivers outstandingly high quality images with good contrast and colour reproduction. Although at its best when displaying a native HD input, the TV can also make the best of standard definition pictures, whether digital, analogue or upscaled.
As well as the familiar Sony picture quality, the KDL-32V5500 is a very stylish device with a very contemporary piano black finish and a built-in swivel stand. The device wears its eco-credentials on its sleeve, with a variety of Eco settings and a light sensor to automatically adjust brightness levels according to the ambient light levels.
Audio quality is good too, in as much as you can expect from a sound system with two front speakers. Digital surround sound offers a virtual surround effect, and you can use the Voice Zoom feature to enhance voices without turning up the overall volume.
Connectivity is excellent too. As well as the four HDMI ports previously mentioned, a USB connection lets you watch photos or videos on the big screen and the device is DLNA-compatible, making it easy to network your home computer.
All things considered, this is a very accomplished television, and it's not hard to see why it's become so popular. The 32V5500 maintains Sony's reputation as top manufacturer of LCD TV's.
