Samsung LE32R74BD Review

The Samsung LE32R74BD is a best selling and highly rated 32-inch HD-Ready flat panel television. Samsung's R74 series of LCD TV's are a superb mid-price offering that deliver almost plasma-quality images at a very reasonable price. The only thing that we don't like about the R74 series is the glossy black frame which, whilst giving a very nice contemporary look, can be a bit distracting when watching a programme.

This TV fully supports the High-Definition standard, with a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 and a HDMI socket for connecting High Definition inputs such as SkyHD. The resolution of 1366 x 768 is typical for a 32 inch HD screen. The display has a fast response time of 8 milliseconds, to help reduce 'ghosting', a dynamic contrast ratio of 5000:1, 12.8 billion colours and a viewing angle of 178º. Samsung's DNIe technology renders images very nicely, with good colour saturation and sharpness.

The LE32R74BD is equipped with two 'hidden bar type' speakers supporting NICAM Stereo and SRS TruSurround XT for a simulated surround sound effect. Total power output is 20 Watts (2 x 10 Watts), which is typical for a TV of this size.

The TV also offers iDTV (an electronic programme guide for the built-in Freeview digital tuner), Teletext (Mega TTX), Auto Channel Search, Game Mode (for use with a games console) and PIP (Picture-in-Picture). Picture-in-Picture enables you to watch two channels simultaneously, or to watch TV at the same time as viewing images from a DVD, PC, camcorder or other input device. The Samsung LE32R74BD carries the Energy Saving Trust's 'Energy Saving' logo, which means that it meets strict criteria on energy efficiency.

In addition to the HDMI input for connecting High-Definition devices, the Samsung also has DVI, composite, audio (RCA), RF, D-Sub and SCART connections at the rear. The DVI connection enables the TV to be connected to a PC. Front input connectors comprise one composite and one audio (RCA) sockets. Rear output connectors consist of one audio (RCA) and one optical digital socket, and in addition there is a headphone jack.
The LE32R74BD is very slim with a depth of just 80mm. A swivel stand enables the TV to be easily rotated by up to 20º.

This is a really excellent value-for-money 32-inch TV, and we recommend it.

I bought this 8 months agao and have enjoyed many films and digital TV. I chose it becasue it was in my price range but alos - having looked at in store and heard it, it seemed the best. Also the PC-input and the other connection sockets were relatively easy to get to and it had an HDMI socket for the near-tem when I upgarde my DVD. It is my first LCD/digital so it was quite a challenge for 2 weeks while I learnt how to use it. On the bad side - the instruction book is no use for punters like me - no advice on what options in set-up are good for what siutations. Also the switching from channels and inputs is slow. My room is 16x16 and now I'm thinking I could do with bigger screen - but later... when HDMI is broadcast and when the audio standard has settled down.
