The Philips 26PF5521D HD Ready 26 inch LCD TV is beautifully designed with clean lines and a contemporary look with a black and silver finish.
Philips' Digital Crystal Clear and Active Control technology make the picture quality one of the best in class. Digital Crystal Clear is a package of picture innovations developed by Philips that digitally adjusts and optimises picture quality to optimal contrast, colour and sharpness. The display resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels is good for a 26 inch TV, and the display is bright with a brightness of 500 cd/m2. Although the contrast ratio is lower than many comparable TV's, Philips use a unique dimming backlight technology that means that pictures still display with good colour saturation and overall picture quality is excellent.
The 26PF5521D has two 5W speakers located on either side of the screen. The total power output is relatively low, although Dynamic bass enhancement helps to boost the bass frequencies. Virtual Dolby Surround also adds more depth and realism to the sound, but it has to be said that audio quality is not the strongest point of this TV.
A digital Freeview Tuner is integrated into the TV, and this is very easy to use with an auto installation process and an on-screen Electronic Programme Guide to navigate channels and select programmes. There's also an analogue tuner, so in principle you can watch one channel while recording another at the same time, although we wouldn't recommend using analogue input as picture quality will deteriorate noticeably. Instead, it would be better to hook up this TV to a HD source for optimal picture quality.
Connectivity is another strong point, with two HDMI connections for connecting High Definition sources, a component video input, S-video, RGB via SCART, two SCART connections and AV input. That ought to be enough to connect just about anything, and you won't find better connectivity in any similarly priced TV. There are also outputs for audio and a headphone jack.
Other features worth noting are Teletext with 10 page Smart Text, and the table top stand that is included in the sales package.
In summary, this is a well featured TV that looks fabulous and is very reasonably priced. Only the LG 26LC2R offers better value for money in this class.
Digital TV doesn't get much better than this! This Flat TV has Pixel Plus for breathtaking natural pictures, Active Control for optimum brightness and an Electronic Programme Guide for digital TV, all combined in a contemporary design.
