LG 37LC2D ReviewRating: Date: 20-11-2006 The LG 37LC2D is the big brother of the LG 32LC2D and is a competitively priced 37 inch HD Ready LCD TV. The 37 inch LCD market is fiercely competitive, and the LG isn't the cheapest in this class, but it's still very well priced, considering what you get. As we commented in our review of the LG 32LC2D the 37LC2D isn't going to fit happily into every living room with its matt black finish and "computer monitor" styling, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder of course! LG have been generous in supplying both a pedestal mount and a wall bracket in the sales package, so no complaints there.
When it comes to performance, the LG manages to hold its own against the competition. Of course you can spend more and get better quality, but for the price, picture performance is good. This is a HD Ready screen and displays HD video at high quality, with a resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels (WXGA) which is typical for a screen of this size. The screen has a very high contrast ratio of 1,600:1, a wide viewing angle of 178°, and a fast response time of 8 milliseconds, to help reduce any 'ghosting' effects. When viewing non-HD input, various technologies are used to enhance picture quality. A 3D Digital Comb Filter and DCDi digital enhancement are used to improve the quality of sub-HD input. The end result of all this technology is a good quality picture whether watching a HD source or a lower quality picture source.
The audio quality of the 37LC2D is better than it's 32 inch little brother. There are two speakers at the bottom of the screen with a total power output of 30W in SRS TXT Surround Sound. The sound system also has Enhanced Noise Reduction and 6 different modes in EZ Sound to choose from including Flat, Music, Movie, Sports, User and SRS TXT.
The 37LC2D has an integrated Freeview digital tuner with auto programming and channel labels for easy installation. An 8-day Electronic Programme Guide makes navugating through channels a pleasure. Other features include PIP (Picture In Picture), POP (Picture Outside Picture) and Double Window, all allowing you to watch two different channels simultaneously.
The greatest weakness of this TV is in its connectivity options. Whilst it supports all main types of connections, there is just one HDMI input. This is the port that enables you to connect a HD source such as SkyHD. With just one HDMI input there's no room for future expansion. Nevertheless, LG have provided a good choice of other connection ports: 3 SCART connections, component video (Y,Pb,Pr), S-video, RGB input (for connecting a PC) and AV input. Outputs include a digital audio connection, which not too many of LG's competitors offer at this price point.
We like the LG 37LC2D (despite the way it looks!) and it certainly offers good value for money. Picture quality is good enough, and the only real downside is the lack of a second HDMI input. For this you need the LG 37LC3R and we would recommend that you seriously consider this as an alternative.
