Reviewed by dick dastardly on 12/05/2006 In late 2003 I purchased a Sony TV, video and surround sound system. I
chose Sony because I'd heard that their reliability was legendary & I limited my choice to the Sony brand to ease compatibility. I searched
their range for the best deals and researched several review sites -
eventually choosing an KD32DX40 IDTV, a DAV-S 500 home theatre system and an SLV-SE820 VCR.
Within 12 months the processor in the VCR failed. Then, within another 12 months, my DAV-S surround sound system stopped playing dvds & cds and would not eject the inserted music cd.
I have been told that the DVD controller board is faulty and will cost in excess of £120 to fix + engineers time.
I feel so let down by the Sony brand that I have vowed to never again
purchase another product bearing the logo.
The dvd player played ok at first - it wasn't the awesome, breathtaking
cinema type performance I was led to expect, but a rather more faded affair - the rear speakers seemed incredibly feeble and remained so no matter how I tweaked the set-up.
Re the compatibility within brand - USELESS! The DAV-S 500 remote isn't
compatible with either the TV or VCR except for very basic functions like volume and up/down channel selector.
Sony customer service? I tried several times via their helpline to set up the complete package so I could play the VCR through the DAV system AND be able to record any digital tv programs onto the VCR from the TV.
They could not tell me how to route the audio and video connectors between
any of the units! Instead they sent printed examples of default set-ups that showed NO resemblance to the connectors on my units.
I just wanted to take this opportunity to warn people that the Sony brand is NOT all it's cracked up to be - a quick scan of eBay should confirm this, there's no end of faulty Sony dvd players and surround sound systems
listed there.
The review sites sing the DAV systems praises, but for £450 I would expect a Co with Sony's reputation to build a reliable unit that would see more than 2 years in service without fault. Rating:
Reviewed by Greg on 20-01-2005 Great home cinema system. I read loads of reviews before buying, so I was expecting quality. I wasn't disappointed. Sound quality, picture quality are really outstanding. Lots of inputs and outputs for connecting up your system. It's a nice looking device to have in your front room too. Rating:
