Reviewed by J Smith on 06-04-2004 Absolutely brilliant performance. Particularly brilliant with SKY Plus DD5.1 broadcasts (which needs an optical-in connector that fortunately the Panny has got). Rating:
Reviewed by John Skelley on 18-01-2004 I was playing around with getting the sony davs 800 which is a good couple of hundred pounds dearer but I read some unfavourable reviews on its reliability. I bought the panasonic SCHT900 because the specification measured up to the sony system. I got it yesterday for #349 from comet, dont go to dixons its 500 hundred in there! it took about an hour and a half to set up. The instruction manual is a bit daunting but this is a serious sounding piece of kit. Beautiful kicking bass and great sound on tv, films or dvds. there are alot of double key controls on the remote so keep the manual close to hand for a while. It looks cool and sounds good. The bass unit is a bit large and I had a little trouble positioning the box, because my tv is in a corner, and putting it behind, brought the tv out too far. I decided to place it out in front against a wall and it looks ok. This system is Well worth the money. Rating:
Reviewed by Paul Burgess on 06-01-2004 My better half and I had been looking for weeks for a decent, affordable all-in-one kind of home cinema thing. We were about to pay for a #350 Sony thing in Comet, which looked nice and sounded OK (just OK though and we hadn't heard better at this price) when we spotted the Panasonic which had just been set up in the shop for a demo. It looked a bit funny (the main unit looks a bit like a paving slab!) but sounded far better than any of the systems we'd heard in our price range and had just been reduced from #500 to #350! Needless to say we couldn't resist. We got it home, set it up (in under an hour) and have not regretted our decision. The picture on DVDs is fantastic with vivid, real colours, great contrast, sharp edges and no sign of digital distortions. The sound is clear, dynamic and not distorted at high volumes, the speakers easily pulling their weight with the subwoofer coping with the bangs and rumbles of action films. Not just on Dolby or DTS tracks though, one feature can transform any stereo source into surround, which is great for watching films off TV! Normal CDs also sound great on this system, revealing a quality of sound you would expect from a dedicated hifi costing more than this. The RDS tuner is a useful feature too as I haven't yet got round to buying one for my hi fi and now don't need to. My only criticisms would be the instruction manual which is very brief and not too clear, the complex remote control where many keys have 2 different funtions and the lack of eq controls for the sound. None of these are big problems though, after playing with it for a while you learn what everything does and can set it to your taste. In conclusion, for a first-time home cinema purchase I don't think you can go wrong at this price, it's simply fantastic value for money. (Also, the speakers are tall so you don't need to pay another #60(?) for stands like you have to with most systems) If it were stolen we would definitely buy one again. I urge you to get one of these now before they all sell out, you won't regret it. Rating:
