Reviewed by Matt H on 11-10-2004 The four stars would have been five, but my bass unit has gone odd - see below... Until recently I was profoundly content with my thv70r (or Thor to it's friends!...ahem), but after a year and a half of perfect surround sound, excellent bass levels and excellent picture quality, the 140W bass unit has decided to make it's bass level unturnoffable (excuse the english), and make the bass a little too "punchy" even though all settings are at the -10 / minimum level, which would be fine if i didnt have neighbours, now I can't watch tc through surround or watch movies unless im sure the neighbours are not in. And my knowledge of playing around with settings is enough not to make a mistake like: "what, you mean the subwoofer isnt supposed to be on maximum?" or.."you mean the plug has to be switched on to make the pretty machine work?"....anyway I digress Now when i'm watching movies / music channel, I can feel the bass unit thudding through the floor and I guess pounding into next door's house, which as a victim of noise pollution i can say is a horrible thing to experience. But the bass is impressive and the picture quality and DPII and SACD options (amongst many others) make this product an excellent purchase (a year ago I bought it multi-region at a price of £350 which I still feel was a good price) I haven't found any complaints about bass level anywhere else, so I assume this is just me. Anyway, the bass is incredible, the sofa will literally shake and the floor will thud when explosions etc happen - even when the setting is about half way up and the 5.1 makes for delight as arrows wizz past left or right hand side and when a door knocked on a film i literally wondered if someone was at my door until my brain slowly worked it out. if you want power and good quality sound then the thv70r is your baby. Reviewed by James Meeson on 07-01-2004 I bought 3 systems to test(panasonic, jvc, sony)! finally settling with the jvc. The panasonic 310 looks the nuts with mirror finish and wood component speakers for music it sounds it too. But wheres the bass? Very dissapointed with the subwoofer. Then the sony da30 probably the best of the 3. But well I just cant put my finger on it! It just doesn't look as fancy as the others price wise, but a lovely system all the same in music and surround mode. I settled for the jvc v70r mainly as I obtained one cheap ,cant imagine I would pay #600 for it thought. The surround sound was best of the 3 .With puncy bass just like the movies. Audio mucic playback tends to be bass and treble orientated but it wasnt designed to be a cd player! Lots of features, gadgets and the most futuristic of the 3. Its all about impressing people and the jvc looks the part! Rating:
