Reviewed by Gerschwiler on 22/07/2008 A Dream Machine I have a fair amount of experience of standalone DVD/CD recorders eg the JVC DRMV1; the JVC DRMX1 (which failed after just a year I would not buy another JVC product); the Hitachi DV W1E (complicated to use); the Pioneer 5100 DVD HDD recorder; the Toshiba RD-XS30 (my first DVD recorder and a joy to use - still working after a LOT of use over many years); the Sony DVD recorders HX710 (very easy to use but sadly my second one packed up a few days ago after only 18 months light use); Sony HXD770 DVD recorders (good but not quite as simple to use as the 710; and finally the Toshiba RD-XV48. The Toshiba RD-XV48 seems to have everything that anyone could want - Freeview digital tuner, 1080p max quality HD output, DV input socket; and what they call one touch dubbing. FOR EXAMPLE - To copy a VHS tape to the HDD - you insert a VHS tape > the recorder switches to VHS automatically > you then select DUB > then select VHS to HDD > then select YES and off you go - you can walk away and leave the recorder to get on with the job while you get on with other jobs. When it finishes it rewinds the VHS tape (slowing down near the end of the tape to protect it) and ejects it, switching to standby. . (you could select VHS to DVD to copy a VHS tape direct to a DVD disc but although this is quicker this means you cannot edit the recording AND in my experience there is more risk of things going wrong. I prefer to copy to the HDD then edit as necessary and then copy from the HDD to a DVD) - The only fault for me is that the manual is not always easy to understand (as with SO MA NY products from the far east BUT the machine itself is so simple and logical in the way it works I really do not need the manual.
