Toshiba D-R160 Review

Rating:
Date: 14-03-2007
The Toshiba D-R160 is one of the best budget DVD recorders currently available. Retailing for around the £100 mark, it nevertheless offers some features found usually in much more expensive models. One of its chief benefits is simultaneous recording and playback combined with the Timeslip feature - the ability to pause live TV. This means that you can watch a programme whilst it is being recorded, and can pause, rewind and fast forward through the programme as it records. This feature is normally only available on the more expensive HDD (hard disk recorder) machines.

The D-R160 can record on DVD-R and DVD-RW disks, and can also playback DVD-Video disks as well as audio CD, VCD, CD-R, CD-RW and SVCD formats. This choice of formats is more limited than you will find on more expensive models, and so compatibility problems may arise.

The built-in tuner is analogue, as you'd expect from a budget machine. There's no on-screen programme guide or even support for Video Plus+, so this isn't the most user-friendly machine when it comes to recording.

Connectivity is also more limited than some other recorders. There's support for the basics: SCART, S-Video and component video, but no DV input.

With the Toshiba D-R160, you get more than you'd expect for the price, with the Timeslip feature being a welcome and unexpected bonus. However, in other respects, you can see where Toshiba have cut corners to deliver a machine at this low price. Still, if you're in the market for a budget DVD recorder, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better one than this.

Features of the Toshiba D-R160 include:

  • DVD-R/RW recorder
  • Timeslip recording (Chase TV)
  • PAL progressive
  • Component video
  • 6 recording modes
  • 8 event timer

I have tried Verbatim and Maxell dvd's but neither will record. It seems that there are very few, if any, recordable dvd's for this particular model.

Like others I am unable to source correct disks. Disks previously recorded on with this machine suddenly will not reformat and bring up error reference E 4 54040990 or I start recording a programme and it switches off after a few minutes with same message. Always thought Toshiba was a good make but wouldn't touch in future. If anyone sources disk that works would be grateful to know.

Like many others I am unable to get correct disk that will play and record on Toshiba DVD Model D-R160SB. I purchased from Currys store - they have supplied two types (which should work according to the manuel) neither do. I am unable to contact Toshiba to ask for help - they have a help line which we rang - unobtainable - they seem to have no real back-up and do not seem to wish to be contacted. Can anyone help please. Old existing disks still work (Panasonic but cannot get) so recorder is ok.

Hi, I have bought the Toshiba D-R160 dvd recorder. Before buying it i searched the web for reviews about which were mainly positive so i went out & bought it. To say i am delighted with this machine would be an under statement because its brilliant. Its easy to hook up to existing equipment. Set up is automatic but takes about 15 minutes so be patient. Some reviews said that the fan is noisey but its not. The lowest recording quality mode allows you to record 10 hours and the quality is what you would expect from a VCR which is excellent. In the highest quality mode you get 60 minutes of recording time and it also records sound in dolby digital which is cool. The chase play feature is amazing given the price of the machine. Chase play allows you to watch a programme from the start whilst it is half way through recording it. It also allows you to playback something you have previously recorded whilst you are recoding something if you know what i mean. I would highly recommend this dvd recorder and it looks stylish too.
