I have to say im surprised by the reviews put here. My father bought one of these a while ago and we've had NO issues with it since. Admittadly I use it more then he does and I have ripped DVDs using both VCR, Skybox and HDD Camcorder sources. All of which have created easy to use DVDs with good quality video. Granted its probably not the highest resolution or quality you could get, but you pay for what you get. I find it very easy to use and the DVD menu systems are nice enough if not perfect. It does the job needed of it, and unless your a perfectionist or wanting a professional finish then it should do what you want. If you want something better then cough up the money for something better.

I have to disagree with the other reviewers. I set this up in 30 minutes with a cursory glance at the instructions. Have recorded lots of vhs-dvd easily, burnt dvds from my digibox which played fine on mother-in-laws archaic player AND linked my camcorder to it for direct editing. Of course when it does all this it's worth reading the manual first but rocket science it aint ! The point lots of people miss is that you have 'finalise' all dvds before they will play. No problems at all playing other dvds although it IS sensitive to scratches that other cheaper machines ignore - hence 4 stars. Very good product at excellent price.

this was a terrible buy, i urge nobody else to buy this model. it wont play pre recorded discs, now its even recording things, then when you press play after, it says this disc can neither be recorded nor played!!! DO NOT BUY!!!!!

Same as Andy very complex except for the simple one button push for tape to dvd and reverse recording. Took me ages to work out the scart lead combinations (gave up on the s-video)and had a couple of mis burnt dvds for my effort, but can now burn direct from external source - wharfedale freeview terrestial box on line 3. May try from the computer next -if I am brave enough. Just beware which order you switch on any external devices. Tape quality not that brilliant but perhaps that's due to the DVD quality, I play into a Samsung LCD.

Having bee a loyal Sony customer for many years this is a disappointing machine. The manual included is particularly hard to understand. The machine is very complex one and has many futures. I am still looking for feature that I would of expected to be standard such as to be able to record from an external source such as digital terrestrial box. There is no information in the setup when you are using scart sockets to interlink the machine to the other components you have. I think this product is let down by a poor manual and few automatic setup functions. If there was extended manual then this could be put out with the machine or made available via the web site. Not very good this time Sony
