Sony RDR-HXD995 ReviewRating: Date: 17/6/09 These days, people expect a DVD recorder to do a lot more than just record DVD's. And quite right too, especially when you're spending between £200 and £300 on a flagship model such as the Sony RDR-HXD995.
Well, as you'd expect, this DVD recorder can record on a wide range of disk formats, as well as its own 250 GB hard disk drive, which can store up to 710 hours of TV in low quality format, or 36 hours in HQ+ recording mode. With a built-in TV guide you can easily select programs to view or record. A series link feature lets you instantly set a whole series to record. The RDR-HXD995 has built-in analogue and digital (Freeview) receivers, but no Freesat.
Naturally there's a HDMI output with 1080p upscaling, so you can use this with a high definition flatscreen TV. There are also two USB ports, which enable you to connect a digital camera or other kind of storage device for displaying images or videos on your TV. You can use this for saving your camcorder recordings onto disk. A photo slide show feature lets you turn your digital photos into an animated slideshow.
For this kind of money we expect it to do more though, and the RDR-HXD995 includes a feature that we like very much, a Digital Music Jukebox. With this you can store up to 999 digital music tracks and use the device to select and play music through a connected speaker system.
Now, the RDR-HXD995 isn't the most expensive DVD recorder on the market, but it's priced near the top end, so we have to ask if it's worth the money. We think that on balance it is. The key benefit of this machine is the 250GB hard disk, which gives you enough room to keep all your programmes for a while. Smaller disks tend to fill up all too quickly. The other nice features are the easy-to-use Electronic Programme Guide, the HDMI with 1080p upscaling and the USB ports. We really can't find any reason not to award this machine the full 5 stars.
Features of the Sony RDR-HXD995 include:
