Reviewed by John Kerr on 21/12/2011 Bought this piece of keek from tesco. paid around £170 or so, cant remember exactly. I have a samsung flat screen tv that I am very happy with and I thought this would marry up well. Wrong. it is the most frustrating thing I have ever owned. I have spend days trying to get it to record programs. it just wont do it. one out of every 10 shows get recorded. poor effort for a device people buy to record programs... maybe I am doing it wrong, but I have read the manual several times and have never struggled to use an electrical device before. It should be straight forward that anyone can use it. I worked for a computer networking company and this thing bamboozled me to the point I wanted to smash it to bits. The samsung tv I have has a great digital freeview program guide, easy to flick through fast, smooth and you can watch the tv in a small box in the corner while your doing it. excellent. you would think the same company could do the same on this device. Wrong. the guide is slow to populate, takes an age to browse and you cant watch tv while your doing it. IT has all sorts of handy other features for connecting this and that, and playing lots of different media back, but as its main function is to record tv programs and it does that so utterly poorly I cannot recommend. Reviewed by John Wilson on 18/12/2011 Good picture quality and records well from timer on freeview. Sometimes refuses to recognise HDMI and component is B/W on my LG TV. I find if I set up video to 1080p I can get this to work. Copying to DVD is fast and good quality. Anyone else having difficulty with HDMI? Rating:
Reviewed by Andrew on 13/02/2011 Really confusing.. and cant even get the freeview channels... I'm taking it back Rating:

Reviewed by horris on 04/10/2010 paid £89 for mine now I know why. Looks good but hell to record. fires up every hour whilst on stand by, does not capture programme titles, number of hours recording left is confusing does not always record if more than 2 programmes set, if you are watching whilst recording then you get the sub titles?? yes i set to off but it still comes on whilst recording but not on the recorded programme. Takes an age to start and HDMI does not auto switch TV channel like scart lead does. Rating:
Reviewed by Eric on 19/09/2010 I agree with most of the other comments. The picture is good except for five channels which are totally not watchable. (I know this is usually a signal problem, however, my old unit actually dealt happily with all signals under all conditions, at least until it died)). The comments about the way it is programmed are very valid. In short this item is not user friendly. I have just repacked it and it is going back. Rating:
Reviewed by Jen on 18/09/2010 Not recording when it is switched on doesn't sound like a big problem, but it really is annoying. You can only program it to record 12 things. I expected so much more from samsung. Rating:
Reviewed by mark on 07/09/2010 i got the freeview recorder/dvd player yesterday, at first i found it very confusing but am getting to grips with it now. bad point - 1. as you cant watch another prog whilst recording something else , and if the tv is on you have to record it differntly than you would if you timed a record on stand by. 2. you have to name the things you record as it is named as the time/date you recoreded it at. 3. tv guide is slow to look through. 4. menu is confusing, make sure you keep the manual. 5. confusing pause, rewinding mode etc... good points - 1. it has a really good picture, i also have great sound as ive got my surround sound hooked up with it. 2. it looks good and has touch sensitive buttons on device. Reviewed by marilyn on 02/04/2010 Dont like it. complicated. Hate the way you have to have it on standby to record. Worst on ive ever had. Rating:
Reviewed by Leigh on 13/01/2010 Samsung dvd-sh895m Another excellent product from samsung.Stunning pictures easy to use.Looks great sounds excellent only 1 snag with EPG recording does not capture programme name so requires manual input.Easy editing and transfer to and from HDD to DVD Rating:
Reviewed by Gordon on 18/12/2009 Samsung DVD-SH895M will auto set-up & has a Fan for cooling, I found it to very quiet when in use & completely silent in stand-by. It has 4 modes TV, USB, DVD & HDD TV connects to supported Samsung TV via HDMI cable. USB will connect to digital cameras & external Hard Drive (formatted FAT 32 only) Supports Music & Photos. Will not record unless left in stand-by. I thought we had got rid of that feature with the demise of video recorders. Recording TV is easy Select either DVD or HDD Mode then Menu followed by Timer Rec. or Guide. Guide takes you the EPG were you select program to record, this creates a timer record setting, Date Time etc. In Timer Rec. you can edit the time settings etc. and name the title, either accept default name from the EPG or create your own & save. Naming title is via on screen display. I could not get the auto-chapter to work which made editing recorded titles rather clumsy, how ever you have title divide & part delete + delete functions to remove unwanted portions adverts etc. + copy to/from HDD DVD USB. I could not get the Rec. Mode to Work on the box I bought. (SP LP etc.) Although documented in the instruction manual seems it not available yet. Hence returned. Overall I liked this & will consider Samsung again when they have fixed the faults. I feel that using a Timer Setting to Record is far more reliable than using the EPG as some Recorders do. I have tried other boxes and they fail to record if the EPG is bad. Also Twin Tuner would be nice. Rating:
Reviewed by martin on 05/10/2009 bought one from Tesco and it is rubbish - it is complicated and not easy to use. I have tried to record and it just doesnt happen. It then refuses to communicate with the remote so turning it iff and on again is the only way to make it work! Rubbish - it is going back!! Rating:
