Bought this heap of junk from a Comet clearance centre near Glasgow ( an impulse buy as it was under £50). wish I had read the previous comments before I bought it. It doesn't record as it thinks the HDD disc is full even thoough it is completely empty. I took it back to Comet the next day and the store technician told me there was nothing wrong with it and basically implied that I was lying when i brought it back. I would give this product one out of five as it is basically an expensive DVD player, and give Comet clearance zero for customer service. Buyer beware!

Its a shame that the rating does not give an 'OUTSTANDINGLY POOR'. This product should not be on the market! I spent hours poring over the incomprehensible manual before finding this site and realising that the fault was not mine. The recorder works sometimes, sometimes not, and at times records half a programme, either finishing early or starting halfway through. It also appears to be recording when it is not, refuses to cancel a recording unless switched off at the plug and is generally a frustrating pile of junk. I will never buy another Samsung Product!!

In May 2010 I purchased a 42" 3D Samsung HDTV plus a SH893M DVD recorder based on advice from Curry's Witney store. The first attempt at set-up by their installer was abysmal as the installer had no product training for the items concerned. On complaining bitterly the TV was exchanged and another installation attempted. This was only marginally more successful, and after the installer left I found that 8/10 times I tried to use the DVD unit a message appeared on screen saying 'No signal, check connections'. A week later I purchased a Toshiba combi unit (DVD/HDD/VCR recorder) and have never had any problem whatsoever. My neighbour helps me with day to day shopping as I am riddled with arthritis so I gave the Samsung DVD unit to him two days ago (bearing in mind it has not even been switched on for 13 months), but he reports the unit must be defective as he has not been able to get the unit to set up cleanly at all on his system, let alone record on the DVD drive. He, like me, finds the TV signal through the unit frequently drops out, fragments and worse locks the unit completely from Remote control access to its features. I would never buy another Samsung product, in fact I will be purchasing a new HDTV soon so I can get rid of the Samsung 3D unit I have. Samsung should be ashamed to put rubbish like this onto the market for unsuspecting buyers to purchase. If this happened in the USA there would have been a class action by now and a full recall demanded. Of course this is Britain and our toothless Trading Standards mandarins are so unco-ordinated on a national level that it is pointless expecting them to take the whip to Samsung!

DO NOT BUY I was going to write an extensive list of things that are fundamentally wrong with this unit on top of all the problems that other people have encountered, however having now returned two of them and got my money back and bought a hitachi unit I am completely happy with, I have decided not to waste any more of my time on Samsung. I only wish I'd looked at this website before purchasing and saved myself a lot of agrovation, wasted time, unrecorded programs and fruitless emails and calls to Samsung. This unit is clearly flawed from top to bottom, the disturbing thing is that it is still on sale and people are innocently buying them. Samsung should be taking off the shelves surely? I feel sorry for people that have purchased from Currys and are unable to get a refund, they are however in a position to smash it up, run over it with a car, liquidise it and feed it to the cat. If someone could film it and put it on you tube you'd make a lot of people laugh! I would give the unit and Samsung customer service zero stars if I could and will not touch any of their products again. DO NOT BUY

Took it back to Comet within two weeks for a refund but guess what? Comet don't do refunds even if it's faulty, they try a repair, so if you buy from Comet you are stuck with it... Do not buy.

A girlfriend of mine who had purchased a DVD/HD recorder model DVD-SH893M was having difficulty finding the actual name of the program she had recorded. It just seemed to display the channel, time and duration. What should be basic functionality of record and playback seemed to be missing from the product. Having not seen a recording machine that fails to record program information since the days of the VCR I urged her to write to Samsung Customer Services to see if there was some mistake or at least opportunity to upgrade the firmware. Alas all she got was a standard impersonal reply letter not even recognising the nature of the query. Two frustrating phone calls later having navigating multiple tedious menu systems she eventually got to speak to technical support who confirmed negative on both fronts. So they confirmed that the product is not fit for the purpose for which it was sold but offered not apology, rebate or solution. Shoddy product. Shoddy treatment. Don't waste your money!

I bought my SH893M from Currys just over a year ago and cannot believe that I didn't throw it back at them soon after I got it! Being a tolerant chap, I tried to get to grips with the ridiculous manual, put up with the constant screen freezing, accepted that actually it wasn't possible to record anything and watch another program at the same time, and the unbelievably slow remote control processing! When you go into the live program index, half of the detail is missing...........etc. ect. AND, I live in an area of pretty good signal. My LG TV is now connected direct to the aerial, and with built in freeview, the picture is incredible, the remote control response and program index are instantaneous. Generally, I am a Samsung fan, but this bit of kit is just rubbish! Now, I have gone over the warranty period, the DVD player element has started to refuse to load films and blocks on "menu" I have replaced the whole thing with a basic Upscaling HDMI DVD player, and will manage without the recorder part that is, on this machine, of no use to man or beast! I have been in touch with Samsung support who advised me to download an update onto a USB data stick. I did this, and fed it into the SH893 front panel. Despite 100 and something pages of manual, I can find no info that tells you how to install updates. Tomorrow, I am going to sacrifice this machine by hacking it to death with a pickaxe, driving over it with my car, grinding it in a liquidizer and feeding the residue to my neighbours cats! Alternatively, I will send the whole package back to Samsung and ask them to credit me the full amount I paid as the item was never fit for the purpose! (I may need some support for this one........anyone out there on my side?) Isn't it amazing that you can spend over £200 on an item of this sort, tolerate it a few months, and realise very quickly that it has absolutely no value whatsoever, replace it with a Tesco special offer deal at £34 and be much better off.

Firstly when a dvd is playing it makes a horrendous noise that makes me feel like I have a bad case of tinitus.Secondly everything takes ages like turning it on, ejecting dvds, loading a dvd. Thirdly it plays a dvd and then decides it no longer wishes to play that same dvd when you go to watch it again!! Until that is, you switch it on and off again at least 10 times. I can't tell you how close I have come to hurling the damn thing against the wall! But my wife assures me that we may get a couple of quid for it on ebay......I doubt it!

Bought this just before Christmas together with an LG HDD television. Friend installed both and they worked fine for about four weeks. The Samsung SH893M then started to record when it felt like it (or rather not). Now it is losing the Freeview connection via the RF lead from the tv. You find this out when pressing Menu and it won't give you the tv guide. I have had to read the instructions myself (not very clear) and learned how to reset it. Then again it says No Signal and only has 3 of the 4 terrestial channels (why only 3 I wonder) I have to reset it almost every other day. Will be trying to get a refund.

Had the misfortune to come across one of these today, when a neighbour asked me to see if I could help her get it working, having already had help from a family member. She asked because I'm normally quite good with tecky things, having helped with previous computer problems. Can only echo much of what has gone before. User manual is awful and poorly printed in a small font to add to it's failings. The machine does not seem to follow logical thoughts either, if you try to work it out for yourself. She had recorded 3 programs onto HDD, but try as we could, no way would they play back. Samsung website is even worse than the manual, having tried that for help. However, like a previous reviewer, I found there was a fairly recent (Nov 2010) firmware upgrade on the support site, so thought I'd download and install that. Did it to USB stick, but nowhere is there any instruction about what to do with it. Out of desperation, I did ring their helpline. A little help, although clearly overseas and not that easy to understand. Final question to him was about the firmware upgrade. Told me to make sure file wasn't in a folder after unzipping it and it would recognise it and upgrade firmware. Well, surprise surprise, it doesn't. Having read the reviews on here and printed off a copy for her, I've suggested she take it back (a Xmas present) and swap it for any make other than Samsung.

The HDD is OK, so long as it's not your main viewer, IT IS NOT a TWIN TUNER, you have to watch what your recording! One thing in it's favour is that when it has accepted a disc, it copies from the hard drive very quickly! Also it doesn't hold it's memory, if you programme it to record a series, it doesn't, you have to keep checking it & re-programming! To be fair if it functioned properly it would be worth £200+, as it is, with it's bugs and single tuner, IT ISN'T WORTH IT!

I bought a Samsung TV at the same time and chose the Samsung DVD recorder so that it would be more compatible with the Samsung TV. How wrong I was, the recorder is not even compatible with itself. Customer service is a joke as they refuse to deal with you except on the phone, and I've screamed several times at the customer service staff who keep you waiting 1minute at a time with silence and dont keep any record of the previous warranty repair call. Oh, and it takes them 4 months to determine the fault and send you a new unit. What is needed is an initial chapter showing which buttons to press for the required operation. {an'idiot's' guide for people like me) I cannot comment on the 'freeze' on playback - as I have not experienced this - but the recording issues can be overcome. I found it helpful to ring the Samsung helpline. I have previously had 4 Panasonics and with each of them I experienced difficulties in setting up before I got the hang of it.
