Reviewed by Davey on 30/01/2012 This machine model is still beset with issues; it changes recording dates, days and even channels, it will not record a programmed recording unless it is switch off. There is no search facility in the guide, has no series link and is generally totally unreliable. It is a long way from being 'User Friendly' - I also have a Sony HDD DVD Recorder and have absolutely no problems so therefore will never be buying Samsung again. Summary Verdit - Cheap and Nasty. Reviewed by robert on 16/03/2011 There are so many annoying problems with this machine . When recording say a film it does not record chapter marks so if you're playing back the film and dose off half way through you're knackered. There is a marker function to sort of solve the problem but it is a lot of mucking about. Also timer record does not work unless you turn the set off!!!. When recording you can't watch another programme. The only enjoyment I had with it was with my remote control hammer which was very satisfying. DO NOT WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED CASH ON THIS MACHINE WHEN THERE ARE MUCH BETTER OPTIONS OUT THERE !!! Rating:
Reviewed by Sam on 25/01/2011 Whilst the hard drive is quite acceptable, the dvd player Whilst the hard drive has been totally reliable, the DVD unit has been a total disaster from day one. Firstly it was selective as to which disc it would accept and after a very short time, ceased to work at all. My attempts to get some resolution from the dealer resulted in being told that all would come right eventualy when the local signal improved! but that was a myth. The fact is that by the time i realised that, the guarentee had expired and i was told then that i would be required to pay some excessive sum to get it repaired. Speaking to a Panasonic salesman, he nodded knowingly and informed me that he too had the same unit with the same fault. My action was to cut my losses, use the hard drive and buy a new Panasonic set up which works exceptionaly well and gives no trouble Rating:
Reviewed by Alan Evans on 09/11/2010 If you are having the "jumping" problem when playing back from HDD via HDMI download the latest firmware for DVD-SH853M from Samsung's web site. Download the zip file, open the .rar file (Winrar will do this) copy the .ruf file to cd. Insert the cd in the player, it will ask if you want to upgrade the software, reply yes. When software is upgraded cd will eject. You will then need to do a rescan of the stations (Like when new) - hope this helps. Rating:
Reviewed by Art Chad on 07/10/2010 very poor, clips Tv recordings, often missing the end of a programme. Title details hav to be input manually via remote, this takes an age, no title, is transferred from TV programme. You cannot record (dub) from DVD to HDD in short it does less than the cheap Digihome PVR80 box I replaced. Rating:
Reviewed by J sewell on 16/11/2009 Only used my Samsung DVD-SH853M about five time over an 18 month period - the dvd drive then packed up! Makes horible grinding noises. Even before that the instructions were difficiult to understand. Is it worth repairing? I don't think so. Rating:

Reviewed by Ian Boothby on 27/07/2009 Oh dear! I love Samsung stuff but this was a model that should never have been released to the public. I'm a PC engineer by trade but this piece of kit drives me up the wall! It's so difficult to operate - so complicated. It often fails to record at the required preset times, the playback is jerky, the remote complicated but most of all the EPG IS RUBBISH - so slow it's nearly unusable - I use the online guide!! Don't buy this model! Rating:
Reviewed by douglas arnold on 03/12/2008 After a lot of waiting I have at last got rid of the samsung SH853M DVD Recorder and got the Panasonic DMR-EX78EB DVD REC+HDD at to date it is brillant ie easy to record etc with Series Link, not had any problems of picture freeze on playback as I had with the Samsung,I believe this is an inherent problem with the samsung product as my friend across the road has had the same problem. having said all this I do have a samsung 40 in TV which is excellent. Reviewed by Douglas Arnold on 20/10/2008 Not happy as I have the same problem as Emma keeps jumping when playing back from hard drive,i also am using HDMI cable,as far as I know it works through Scart cable but I want to use HDMI cable,I have contacted Samsung and they are sending me a CD to put in DVD player to rectify the problem. If that don't work will have to go back to Samsung. Rating:

Reviewed by Emma on 17/04/2008 Not amused. Had 2 now as 1st one kept jumping when playing back from hard drive, 2nd one did exactly the same. It seems that this only happens when connected via a HDMI cable, meant to be ok when run through Scart Cables, but whats the point of having an HDMI socket if it doesn't work properly when using it!!! Very Disappointed, won't be trying another one. Rating:
Reviewed by Dean on 26/03/2008 Terrible. The most complicated bit of kit I have ever owned. Totally refuses to send dolby digital signal to my surround amp without going into the setup and changing settings. Then you have to switch off and re do it all again to send sound to tv. Hopeless. Dont buy at any cost. Rating:
