Reviewed by Steve Crowe on 04/05/2008 I had one of these for over a year. There have been several instances of the device having what I can only describe as "blonde" moments. The have been several instances where a program is selected via the GuidePlus for recording only to find its recorded completely the wrong channel. GuidePlus is a fool proof program selection interface, if it was implemented properly. Just recently my DVDR7260H decided to "self delete" about 10 films/programs and merge several programs into two mega files over one 6 hours long and the other 4 hours long. The first one I purchased I took back because it would randomly decide not to turn on, even though the display indicated it was receiving a transmission from the remote control. To add to my torment it would in standby randomly start and then return to standby. The other irritation that this particular one was prone to loosing all the GuidePlus data and program information, on the third instance, within two weeks of purchase , I took it back. Personally I would not recommend one, the embedded firmware appears to still have several bugs in it. In my personal opinion, it's only just acceptable. Rating:
Reviewed by Alan Cooper on 01/03/2008 Superb machine. So quick to set recordings with the guide plus video plus system, no numbers required. Some people complain about insensitivity, but seems ok here. Some complain about inability to record to dvd directly, but the fast dubbing is great and the harddrive is big so not an issue. Program info titles automatically get recorded. Not a single failed disk, not fussy about being a good brand like my old Panasonic which was super fussy. Occasionally need to switch off and restart but mainly a good machine. Rating:
Reviewed by Mark on 27/12/2007 The biggest drawback is its speed and the remote is not very sensitive. it seems the unit needs warm up. First thing in the morning after a long standby will take more time (could be 30 seconds) to see anything on screen. I also have the Sony RDR-HD1070. Hate it. The Sony makes the Philips super quiet. When the Sony starts, it sounds like a wind tunnel. In the middle of the night, it comes alive as well. I would not recommend the Sony for the bedroom. Philips reasonable. The Philips is not perfect. It can be improved in a few area but considering its pricing, it is a value for money. Rating:
Reviewed by Percy Bowler on 27/06/2007 I've had one of these players for about 4 months now and while it is good in some ways - the build quality is very good, it's very quiet and features such as the timeshift buffer are useful, it does have some major flaws. My main problem with it is the speed of unit. When it's plugged in, you press the on/standby button on the unit or the remote, nothing happens, you press the HDD button on the unit or the remote, nothing happens, you then press the TV tuner button on the remote and hey presto it comes to life. Sometimes it does work with the first press, but for the most part, it does not. I've pressed my ear to the unit to see if there is any sound coming from the HDD after the first or second press of the on/standby button, but there is no sign of life. The other main problems are the inability to change the quality of recording for one program - this is all down to the timeshift buffer - you can only record at the current setting so if you want one program in HQ and one in LP, you can't do this. The other main drawback is the inability to record direct to DVD, everything has to be recorded to HDD, then copied. The copying is fast however. Having paid less for this unit than I would have done for a similar unit from Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic or Toshiba, I can forgive the shortcomings, but it's just a shame that a company like Philips can fall short of the mark.
