The machine will distroy the dvd whivh has been recorded, will get the message 'DISK ERROR','DISK WARNING','NO DISK' even there is a disk inside the machine, can't reading the disk, have to waste so much of times with this STUPID MACHINE, whatever you try to make it work finely you just wasteyour time with this HORRIBLE MACHINE.Record red light keep go on even have been stop record, and so on and so on. DONT BUY THIS STUPID RECORDER becouse philip can't make it good, but I do admire the t.v. from philip. It work perfectly even for twenty years, but not for the dvd recorder. Rating:

Reviewed by kevinkev on 20/08/2007 This machine at first delivered everything that was promised but after just six months of light use my problems began. First of all my recorder would struggle to read copied disks, I thought perhaps this was due to wear and tear of the disks but a short time after I had problems with some original dvds, it would play some but not others. There were no apparent reasons for this. i.e. damaged or dirty disks, cheap or expensive disks. The machine has always ran very hot, in fact much hotter than any audio or video equipment I have owned before. I'm not at all impressed with the Phillips DVDR70s short life span. After paying nearly £300 you would expect it to last more than six months when the machine hasnt really been worked. Rating:
Reviewed by Scooterdan on 09/07/2006 Ive had this DVD recorder for 18 months and have replaced it now with a Samsung model. The Philips was quite easy to use, once you had got used to the strange menu system. However the problems started about 6 months ago when recordings failed all the time....whether it was new or old discs or cheap or expensive ones! After not being able to record anything, playing normal dvds started to get jumpy and jerky towards the end all the time. These disc played fine on the £20 dvd player in the bedroom but not on the Philips. Beware! Rating:

Reviewed by Sami on 18-08-2005 Me again! Now I've had a chance to play a bit now. I've now been able to record old videos onto DVD!!! So old wedding/family videos will now be kept intact forever!! I do have a slight moan though, when recording and say you want to pause to cut out adverts or something, the screen freezes for a good few seconds and so you can't see what it going on on the tv and I think you have to change channel to see the tv again. But once you get the hang of it, it's all good! Rating:
Reviewed by Sami on 05-07-2005 I have only had this for a week and so haven't had the chance to play with it, I've only had a quick flick through the manual. However, while I was at Hyde Park for Live 8, I called my mum and she recorded the whole thing on DVD for me because it is that easy to use!!!! She had to to use about 4 DVDs because it was on TV for so long, but she was able to change it and continue no problem. I look forward to seeing what else I can do with it! Rating:
Reviewed by SB on 10-05-2005 This is a really good DVD Recorder. We bought it a couple of weeks ago, and have admittedly only just figured out how to record on it - you need a tv with 2 scart sockets basically. Looks good, design is good, and although some people don't rate it that good, I'm happy with it. Very easy to use when recording - which is what you want really. Rating:
Reviewed by Charles on 21-02-2005 Seems like mixed reviews for this one. I bought this expecting it to be multi-region, but it turns out not to be. I've read that you can enter a code to switch it to region 1 and another code to switch it back to region 2, but that sounds a bit risky to me. I prefer to have a region 2 recorder that works and is still covered by warranty! I didn't find it very user-friendly at first, and it took me some time to get it recording at all, but now that I've put the time in I can make it do what I want. Not exactly the easiest product to use however. The manual is poor too. Having said all that it does work ok as a DVD recorder, but I don't think I'd buy this one again. Rating:
Reviewed by Geoffrey Richards-Bray on 27-12-2004 I'm sure most buyers have read much about the problems with Philips DVD recorders and their shoddy quality compounded by Philips' lack of product knowledge within their technical support. All this I found to be true with my DVDR70. All was fine for about 12 months, then slowly the incidence of recording freeze increased. You start your recoding and someway in the recorder closes down but the record light stays on, this requires the machine to be unplugged, the recording is lost. Philips say that on the 1 hour and maybe the 2 hour record times the machine is unable to recover from errors within the blank DVD. They suggest recording a dummy recording on the blank at the 2 hour setting which allows the machine to identify problems with the disk, the next recording at 1 hour or 2 hour should then be OK. This I guess will only work with DVD+RW? I am just testing this theory out at the moment, if that fails the R70 is out with the trash. Another problem is that you can't record on manual by setting the record until it reaches the end. The R70 doesn't have time to post format the disk, so the recording is lost. Similarly if you record 2 programmes, the first ending at say 8PM and the next starting at 8PM, you need to allow a couple of minutes between recordings else the second recording is lost. This said, when it does record the quality is great. Suggest it's fine for copying Camcorder tapes etc or unprotected VCR tapes. Rating:
Reviewed by Karl on 08-09-2004 I bought this DVDR70 from Argos after the price drop, (no mains lead in box), it took me a while to get my head round it as I've been using VCRs for too long! I'm glad I bought DVD+RWs as they are a lot easier to use than DVD+Rs, and you can record over them, the record quality is great, the deck is well made and looks good. What I don't like is, unless the disc is "16:9", each time I switch on, it forces my widescreen TV onto "4:3" which means I have to use the TV remote to select a full picture every time! It plays R1 NTSC discs fine even though the instruction book informs the user it is set at R2! Recordings made on this DVDR play on DVD players without any problems.- recommended. Rating:
Reviewed by Steven on 02-01-2004 Top product - this is an absolute steal. Very easy to use and the recording quality is excellent. Rating:
Reviewed by Steve on 18-12-2003 Easy to use and set up, good picture quality overall, but for those treasured moments you may be restricted to the highest image quality setting as on other modes the image quality can become blocky. Only use DVD+RW unless you are sure of a perfect copy first time onto DVD+R. Very good build quality and stylish too. Recommended. Rating:
