Bought my Philips DVDR-610 in September 2004. Noisy fan but TV volume drowned this out. Have had no problems recording onto dvd+rw & dvd+r formats until recently. No problem with playback of DVDs. Clock has been OK and Timer function has caused no problem. Recently problems have started..... it has started to switch itself off during recording and playback and discs have started to become invalid having just been recorded. The Philips DVDR-610 has given good service for the last 4 years and has not been a total waste of money but newer and better machines are available on the market and I may well replace this model soon.

Bought my Philips DVDR-610 in Novemeber 2004. I can only say it was the worst £200 I ever spent. I had: clock time resetting to 10 minutes or ahead at random noises that sounded like a prop jet taking off, assume this is the fan or the DVD drive problems playing commercial DVDs, it is annoying when you start watching a film and 20 minutes in the machine auto switches off the playback - I then had to refind the location where it stopped and restart just before, then it played ok! finally a small problem has now become major, that is the inability of the machine to record. I believe this was always a problem but thought it may be the DVDRW discs I was using. But no, the machine appears to begin recording and 10 minutes in there are clicking sounds and the machine switches off having recorded nothing - using Philips, TDK and other DVDRW. So the machine is now at the bottom of the wardrobe and I have a much better SONY machine that is perfect...quiet, records well no problem with commercial film DVDs. Philips of course deny all problems and tell me to go to servicecare and pay for repair as the machine is out of guarantee; well I think it was faulty from the start. My suggestion avoid Philips DVD recorders and buy SONY or Panasonic which have a much better write-up and reliability. Well they work

We received our DVDR610 on Christmas Day as a present. It has been repaired 3 times since then and is still faulty saying 'No disc'. This would made the fourth repair! We have only used it about a dozen times in all as it just kept going wrong. Can't speak to anyone at Dabs - only by email - and at the moment we are waiting to hear back from them. Would prefer a refund to a replacement but I doubt Dabs will do that!

I must say I havent had nearly as much trouble as the rest of you with the 610. I bought mine as ex-demo off Ebay, and have had no problems with freezing or clock jumping etc. I did download the update, but did that as a matter of routine - not because of problems. Only thing I will say is it likes responding to signals from my Sky+ and audio remote controls. For example, if I turn the volume up or down, or switch channels on the Sky, or press just about any button on any remote, the 610 may decide to think its the Philips remote, and turn itself off, or activate another function as though you were using the DVD remote. Thats a bit annoying, but other than that I have to say I like this player and am happy with it. Now I have said that its probably going to start playing up!! :-O

I have similar problems to everyone else. Bought the machine in Nov 04. The clock kept jumping, installed updates and this seems to be fixed. Now the machine records for a while then stops mid way. Pressing record again and it starts again, for a while. So its no good as a programme recorder as you cannot leave it. Also on play back of bought DVDs I find it plays them but after say 6-10 minutes it can just pack up. This problem is intermittemnt but spoils the enjoyment of a film. Very poor product, Philips technical group are hopeless, I just wish I could get a refund.

I work for Currys and thought I held a reasonable level of knowledge about electronics but the 610 has me baffled. It records half or a quarter of programmes if it decides to record at all. The error messages drive me insane and it is noisy. I have a recordable dvd that doesn't record - what a waste of money!!

I purchased this at Currys for £178.75. It was easily installed and the menu was not too difficult. The machine kept locking up and I had to switch off at the mains and then on to get it going. The first time I tried to play back a recording, the machine locked up. I was not able to remove the disk or use the machine at all. The machine was sent back for repair but unable to aquire the parts Philips. This is now six weeks ago. I am getting a refund.I don't think I will get my disk back. By the by had a devil of a time to get a refund from Currys.

Worst thing I ever bought. You try to record on a DVD+R and your recording sticks after about an hour. There is nothing you can do with it other than to unplug it as everything locks up on it. Try to record on a DVD+RW and then try to play it back and all you get is an 'error' DVD+message on the screen. Your recording will not play at all. The only way to access what you have recorded is via the edit function. Very poor machine indeed. If you have £200 to spend you would be better investing in another make and avoid this monster completely.

I got one of these recorders for Christmas to keep in my room. My parents have the earlier model in the lounge, and I always found it fairly okay (although sometimes the timer seemed to have a mind of its own). I immediately noticed the very loud fan, which was on during all playback, and as it is not kept in a cabinet, was ridiculously loud. I managed to get used to it by having my television volume at deafening levels (!), but after reading some recommendations on other sites, I have downloaded the update from http://www.p4c.philips.com/ and found it to now work perfectly (fingers crossed!). The fan is no longer on and my tv is back to normal volume! The recorder had also recently developed the mysterious jumping clock problem, but this has also been fixed with the update. Hope this helps anyone who's having annoying difficulties with their recorder :o) P.S. The recording quality is fantastic and I highly recommend the recorder to everyone... as long as they download the update!

Mine is going back too. After experiencing the fan problem and the martian summer time clock problem, i INSTALLED 2 UPDATES. Now I am left with the problems detailed by Edward and JP Moreaux. Plus it sometimes says disks are invalid format when it has just recorded onto them. I give up!

Bought the 610 in Oct. Returned it for replacement No2 in Nov. Returned No2 in Nov for No3. Returned No3 in Dec. That's it, I have had it with the 610. Contacted Philips Tech guys & Customer Services about 12-15 times, what a waste of telephone time and money. Tech guys fob you off. Try this, try that. Put upgrade No1 into the 610 that's bound to fix the problem. Oh dear, it should have solved your problem. Never mind , we will send you upgrade No2, that's bound to put things right. Oh dear, that doesn't work either. Should have done. Never mind, we will look at the problem in the New Year after the holidays. DVDR610 stopped for no reason when transferring video holiday tapes to DVDs anywhere from 3 to 24 times on a 3 or 4Hrs video. Only had 4 or 5 DVDs with no stoppages. These stops were completely random, no pattern whatsoever, and happened on all three 610s. It's your money, but in my experience, look elsewhere.

I got this machine from sainsbury's when they had them up at £99 by mistake. If I had paid any more it would have gone back. The fan has a mind of it's own and revs up noisily even on standby. The clock randomly switches between GMT and martian summer time and when connected to my pace twin pvr it drags so much signal the twin stops recording. Coupled with the fact it's the size of a 1979 ferguson videostar (or medium sized caravan) and has the most tedious menu system I can remember using makes this a dreadful machine. Don't buy one, for the love of god....save yourself!!

Philips have acknowledged there is a problem but do not have a fix yet! Do not buy if you want to use the timer function.

I'm pleased with my DVDR610. It has been reliable, not like the first reviewer. It's quite easy to use. There is a software upgrade on the Philips site which I haven't bothered with yet. One problem I've found is that it won't play CD's with my digital photos on like it's supposed to.

I wanted a recorder that was not RAM format and at £199.95 the Philips seemed a bargain. You can't go wrong with the inventor of CD's right? Wrong. The 1st unit kept switching itself off for no reason and the replacement unit would hardly ever record all of what I wanted, sometimes recording for a few minutes, other times for an hour, but the end result was almost always the same. I could not trust it. Add to this a poor Instruction Manual and I wished I had never invested in one. Enough's enough, I have got a refund and I am looking at the slightly dearer Samsung or Sony model,YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
