I bought one about 3 years ago. When I got it, I spent the whole day reading the long-winded manual and trying to set up the EPG, which still doesn't work. The first time I recorded, it spent an hour loading up and then recorded. However, if you're in a rush, you have to input the date every day if you turn it off for the night. When I burnt the video to disc, it worked fine, even in my PS2, but as soon as I switched to Kodak DVDs, it spent an hour burning any video, and even the DVD player itself couldn't read the disc. It is extremely large, has a habit of coming unconnected and, for no reason, has stopped recording any programs, no matter how empty the HDD is. The EPG is extremely difficult to use, and is useless when Sky changes a channel number. I say...don't bother.

Same experience with the EPG as Mike M (12/05/2007). If they can't get that right what else is wrong? Display and Audio OK, but so is everyone elses. In genral over-complicated and difficult to use. Remote wheel is cheap and nasty, buttons designed for visual effect rather than prcatical use. AVOID.

I bought one jan 2008 and its rubbish. The hardware appears fine but the software is awful. It crashes for no reason, for instance I recorded material from VHS onto the hard disk and then asked it to copy onto DVD - it just resets twice and ignores me. Sometimes it works but on this particular file it never does, so I cannot transfer it to the PC (which is what I was trying to achieve). Its user interface is clunky and slow, it takes ages to start up. In summary it would be better to use your old PC which kind of defeats the object.

Don't bother with this very shoddy piece of kit ! I have no problem using the user interface - compared to a lot of products I've used before it is reasonably straightforward. The problem with this devive is that the EPG will fail after a few weeks of use. To begin with you'll find all the program info has disappeared, as well as the host channel and receiver setup. to begin with you can re-enter all the data and it will function okay again for a few days. It then gets prgressively worse, to the point where it doesn't matter how many times you re-enter the data it just refuses to do anything - no more EPG. Phillips support is useless - no help at all. Save your money - avoid this very faulty product !

Read the last few reviews after seeing one going for a decent price in Curries and have to say it is excellent. It installed with no more than a scart lead connection on a Sony TV it loaded all the channels from the TV itself and then watched a DVD and have to say the picture is excellent, and as for the sound reproduction...WOW. The following day it had a full set of channel listings set up and is extrememly easy to programme your viewing, like Sky+ but a bit clearer. There are plenty of options in the extensive features and looking at the manual they are explained in great detail and found it a breeze. If you see one buy it.

First of all, there is no doubt that this machine isn't for those expecting to dip their toe in DVD recorders. As a stand alone DVD player the picture and sound quality is top notch. As a stand alone DVD recorder, again, the quality of your recordings are excellent even to some of the extended play settings (you can set it to record at varying levels of quality from DVD quality down to VHS standard). The interface is complicated for a day or two, unless you have little patience or a desire to read the manual, but once you get to grips with it you cannot ask for a more versatile DVD recorder with the bonus of a 250hour hard drive, similar to Sky+ in many ways. You can edit recordings on the hard drive as you would on a PC, take out adverts or unwanted bits from a home movie you have recorded, yes another benefit of this machine is the number of inputs, everything is catered for DV, S-video and many combinations of scart etc, and the ability to edit your recordings is rare on recorders and gives this the edge, oh you can set up photo slide shows and play MP3s, if you have a DVD full of MP3s just hook it up to a surround system and you will never need to mess about changing CD's at you next party. You can pause live TV and set recording for shows as you do with SKY+, in fact if you have SKY+ this is the perfect partner. There are so many features to this machine it is easy to be put off but don't be put off by those that gave up because of the steep learning curve of this excellent machine, persevere and you will be glad you did.

I can totaly understand people being put off by what initially seems a dauntingly complex machine. It took me a while to get to grips with it but I now know one thing above all else, FOLLOW THE MANUAL EXACTLY! If you do this you should be fine. I have got this thing recording from just about every device I have in the house from VCR to MP4 player and the quality is great. Editing is straight forward after a little practice. Because no one likes this machine it is going nice and cheap. If you don't mind a bit of a challenge and READING THE MANUAL PROPERLY AND CAREFULLY you will get one hell of a comprehensive piece of kit! It even labels your recordings with the Sky programme info if you set up the G-Link.

I bought the Philips DVDR5350H a couple of months ago. I have tried to persevere with the unworkable user interface, the erratic behaviour, and a whole host of problems. I was determined that I wasn't going to give up, because it was an expensive device, and I didn't want to admit that I had wasted my money. Of course we all have our limitations, and I now realise that the Philips DVD is more than a match for me. I'm currently searching the web for reviews on other DVDs. I don't want to impulse buy after being bitten so badly by the Philips. Overall, my main problem was the user interface. Even if the software had been ready for release (and I'd be surprised if it passed the most basic Beta test), the user interface is enough to send this device into the skip. Enjoyment of this DVD is an impossibility, because its so difficult to use. The features are all there, the quality of the recordings is good, it should be a great device, but it isn't. Don't waste your money.

My honest advice to anyone who is considering purchasing the Philips DVDR5350H/05 is to forget it. If you are desperate for a DVD recorders with bells and whistles attached take a deep breath and put the thought out of your head - at least until they have perfected building these things. The DVDR5350H has given me nothing but grief since I bought it. A bit of background is useful here - I am a self-professed tech-enthusiast who can fix anything mechanical. - It took ages to set this piece of junk up and when I did it took a full day (so you can't actually record anything properly until it finishes) to update its Tv guide. Even if you have a bit of technical knowledge it is rediculously complicated to set-up. - When its memory buffer (used to hold some of your previous viewing to enable you to rewind and pause live TV) is quite full it has the worrying habit of crashing and re-booting itself! - Similarly, it is prone to freezing (like alot of HDD recorders). - When the power supply is disconnected for so much as a second it forgets what time it is so all your programs refuse to record as sheduled (until it manages to recalibrate itself ages later). - The remote control is overly complicated and every button is somehow where you least expect it to be! (The record button is nowhere near the play, pause buttons etc). - You can't properly fast-foward through programs - it is more of a leap from one clip to another so it is hard to get exactly where you want to go. - Most importantly, there is little or no support for the DVDR5350H/05 from Philips. There are no firmware (the software which is running your recorder) updates availiable - despite endless software problems. This list is of just a few problems associated with the recorder from my experience. It is certainly not the only problems you will face if you buy one. Don't waste your money on this (which is essentially an unfinished beta product).
