This DVD recorder fails to have a very important feature and that is no option to insert manual chapters onto recordings! yes you can set it to automatically insert chapters every five minutes but what good is that when you are recording a concert and want to put chapter markers between songs so you can get to them easily! without being able to insert chapters you have to fast forward through the disc like the old VHS recorders! My very old 2005 Philips recorder had a button on the remote which inserted a chapter marker as you actually recorded so it seems Philips are not progressing rather regressing in terms of their features! Apart from that the recorder is good quality and performs well but i can honestly say that if their future dvd recorders also omit a manual chapter option i will be buying my next recorder from another manuacturer! Parents could not get to record properly and the eject can take minutes to decide if going to work.Display goes blank when trying to escape from menu and 'locks up'. tuner quality of picture is poor but playback of DVD movies is good. Too complicated to use and remote is fiddly.

I have only kept this thing for 4 hours before it is going back! There is some problem with it not being able to cope with reading some blank discs that Philips themselves make. On calling Philips I was told they know there is a "problem" with the model so they could send me an upgrade disc which will take 10 days to get here! Great, so when asked how long they have known there is a major problem, oh a couple of weeks now, and yet they have not been recalled and the customer is not informed of any issues. you only need to google the player detials to see the problems. This is one to stear clear of. Philips need to get their act together. Shame for what i held as a good name. Will never have another of their products again.

I will start off with the minuses that I have found out so far with this DVD Recorder. - in no particular order of importance: 1.) Zero's on the front LED panel have an annoying line through them. 2.) The sleek smooth design is ruined by the big round navigation button on the front of the unit with a big square red record button (would have been better a round red button) -don't look nice. 3.) Front display panel horrible pale blue colour - would have looked nice if it was dark blue. 3.) Front Display Panel does not 'dim' when in standby and cannot be turned off totally in a menu. 4.) I don't think it takes the info (from teletext) to name the title of the thing you have recorded. I.E. if you record something on BBC1, in the index screen of what you have recorded it just says 'TITLE' and not named it automatically to BBC1 like other previous Philips DVD Recorders did. 5.) There doesn't seem to be a way of manually adding chapters whilst in the middle of recording something. 6.) When Naming a title for the index screen you only have 9 letters maximum and its a tedious way of 'picking the letters' rather than using the numbered keypad buttons to add letters as in where you used to be able to press the number 2 button for ABC. 7.) There does not seem to be any slow motion forward or backwards trick play when watching a DVD. 8.) the Remote control does not control the TV like previous Philips DVD recorder remotes even if you have a Philips TV! 9.) There seems no way of keeping the onscreen display permanently on if you want to whilst recording it stays for a couple of seconds and disappears. 10.) When selecting recording mode (Quality) it just shows HQ / SP / EP etc.. far better to have HQ and then 1hr in brackets -= HQ (1hr) 11.) can only lock whole disk - you cannot seem to lock just individual Titles on the disk. 12.) small 'timer' word in front display when timer is set. - would even be better if the word 'timer' flashed 13.) No LED light above the 'stby/power' switch on the front of the unit. It could have been red for standby & green (or even nicer blue) for on. 14. Poor (cheap looking) menu icons and onscreen display - not at all like philips usual previous menu and index screen displays. 15.) words & icons in the front panel LED display is all one colour - boring pale blue! - no red or any other colour. (they could have put the timer symbol in red as well) 16.) No Dolby 5.1 Sockets at the rear, just left & right. No optical out socket. 17.) No progressive scan - not on the UK one anyway. 18.) the writing on the front of the unit doesn't stand out enough. 19.) some of the buttons on the remote control are too small and too close together. 20.) shame there is not a USB input socket on the recorder. 21.) no 'follow TV' facility like their previous recorders. 22. Only 6 Hours Max recording on one disc. 23.) in Auto Chapter marker setting its either on (every 5 minutes) or off - you cannot set the interval minutes manually. A lot of the issues I raised above could be sorted out in future Firmware Updates maybe I am sure if they write the enhancements into the update. Whats Good: 1.) nice and small slimline design. 2.) Sockets on front hidden behind a flap. 3.) DIVX compatibility thank goodness at last Philips caught on putting it on their DVD Recorders. 4.) Dual format DVD+ & DVD- again glad they are steered away from just DVD+R/RW. 5.) Fairly Quiet in operation - gone is the cooling fan inside the unit it seems. You can hear quite loudly the DVD loader as it finds tracks though and when its updating the disc menu. 6.) the Picture (recorded) seems very good in playback even in Super Long Play (SLP). 7.) The DV in Socket is a welcome feature especially at this price. 8.) You get a Scart lead with it and batteries for the remote control. Gone are the days they give you a free blank DVD+RW disk though! 9.) I am glad to see they put back the HQ 1hr setting. My previous Philips (DVDR610) omitted the 1hr setting. Mind you it did go up to 8hr recording though whereas this one goes up to 6hr max. I think thats about it for now. I am still messing about with it and finding out its features (or lack of features) - I still think its good value for money especially with the DV in socket and the DIVX and Dual format recording. The price I paid was 179.00 Euro (Tesco Ireland) which is a smashing good price. Andy.
