Panasonic DMRES15 Review

Panasonic DVD recorders are amongst the most popular, and the DMR-ES15EB-S is Panasonic's entry-level system. A quick glance at the specs reveals why the Panasonic range is so popular. Even though this is a budget recorder, it includes several features that more expensive rivals fail to offer.

The first thing to note is that the DMR-ES15EB-S, like all of the current Panasonic range, is compatible with all formats of DVD. That means that it can not only play, but can also record on DVD-RAM, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R and DVD-RW disks. In addition it can playback standard DVD's, CD's and recordable CD's.

The fact that it can record on DVD-RAM means that, even though it lacks a hard drive (HDD), it still offers the Timeslip recording feature that the more expensive HDD machines have. Timeslip enables you to pause and rewind live TV, whilst the programme you are watching continues to record. Very useful!

Picture quality is good, with progressive scan output, although the built-in tuner is just an analogue tuner. If you want to upgrade to a digital Freeview tuner, then the Panasonic DMR-EZ25EB-S would be the machine to go for. Audio quality is good too, with full support for Dolby Digital and an optical audio output connection. In addition to the optical audio output, connectivity includes two SCART sockets, RGB output and S-Video output.

Overall this is a very well specified budget recorder that is easy to use. The graphical user interface makes it very easy to perform everyday tasks like playback, recording, scheduling and copying. Functions are relatively basic and there are obvious things missing like a digital tuner, electronic programme guide and more connectivity options. However, that's to be expected at this price, and in fact the DMRES15 offers more than you'd expect for the money. 'What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision 2006' awarded the DMRES15 five stars, and noted that, "The Panasonic is a great value, stylish, ultra efficient DVD recorder that's the obvious star here." We agree with these sentiments, but have awarded four stars on the grounds that for a little extra money you can get quite a few extra features. Our recommended product is the DMRES15's bigger brother: the Panasonic DMR-EZ25EB-S.

Features of the Panasonic DMRES15 include:

  • Super Multi Format Flexibility
  • Easy Operation
  • Instant Power to Get Recording
  • Best Picture Quality

I have very many DVD-R discs, which I burned myself on a PC, which play perfectly satisfactorily on three different cheap, basic DVD players. I tried ten of those discs in the Panasonic machine. Only three played. The others were rejected as "incompatible". I made a copy of one of those discs onto a DVD+R disc. Although it played on my three DVD players, the Panasonic rejected it as "incompatible". I feel that this behaviour is not due to a fault in my particular machine but is due to a design defect in the model.
