Reviewed by russzero on 22/12/2007 we already have a DMR-ES10 which this model will replace .. for 2 reasons. 1st the older model has been trouble-some & had to be returned for repair when 1st purchased due to recording & playback faults. these problems are still on-going. secondly i was just plain curious about this 1080 upscaling. i decided to stick with another purchase of a panasonic because although our older model is a bit touchy with DVD recording .. i still think the final picture playback is good. also the menus are easy .. as are the quick rec functions. comparing the HDMI playback & the COMPONENT output we really have to look very close & hard to see anything different at all. ?? the freeview tuner works ok .. with crisp picture quality. we have a bad signal here but it works as good .. signal wise .. as our stand alone box .. so its handy for direct to disk recordings. part of the reason for the need to check this dvd out was that we have also only just purchased a Panasonic plasma HD tv TH-37PX70BA. we .. myself & family have come to the conclusion that u get OUT what u put IN. so if the recording is bad .. u get BAD. if its good .. the playback is GOOD. in my opinion theres a similarity between this & the old VHS video system. our old CRT / VHS set up gave pretty sharp pictures .. or NOT .. depending on the signal recorded. I find the new digital transmissions can look a bit smeary sometimes compared to the old terrestrial transmissions .. apparently its down to bandwidth & compressions. more stations mean less space = lesser quality. the ALL black finish is a step away from the old silver styled recorders. with a black fascia in a darkened room it can make it harder to see the buttons on the front. the DMR-ES10 had a lot more inputs .. which no other make seems to have either .. nor does this new model. this is a problem because of most products have more & more scart outputs .. so to connect eg. sat boxes / freeview / 2nd dvd / sky / ntl box / video u soon use up the sockets. also there is no RF out .. only through .. so running a feed round the house is not available with this model either .. so ive had to dig out an old video recorder to do this! verdict : well overall so far so good. the menus are very similar to the old model. the recordings are good. picture quality & playback is also good. having mastered the 1st machine .. this new model is a doddle to operate. apart from some minor niggles i would recommend this recorder. it has a quick record function as standard (no need to format any disk before use)& ive swapped disks pre-finalize with no problems either. the only thing i cant comment on is RAM-disks.
