Only had the 5006 for a few days now, and just completed setting up the machine and making my first recording. Bad point first, which I may be able to resolve in time- tuner picture quality is grainy on some channels. As I say, I may be able to resolve this. The fan cooler is a bit noisy- solution turn the sound up if it annoys you that much. Good points. It does exactly what it says it is meant to do. I got some cheap Datawrite blank dvd+r dvds and it works with them fine. The slp picture quality seems to be OK so far, in my opinion as good as pre-recorded vhs, which is tolerable. I've never liked pre-recorded vhs as I think think the film companies short change the punter, but here the quality is good enough given the recording time benefits of SLP. On Sp mode I see no difference between broadcast and recorded quality. HQ recordings are therefore likely to be even better. I have seen reviews putting this product down in temrs of quality and reliability. Time will tell on reliability. Tuner issue aside, quality seems fine. The disc tray does however seem a bit fragile, so don't let kids near it.

Compare DVD recorders to buying a car. No one would be happy to find that, after buying a car, there was a 4-5 day waiting period before it could be driven and that would require multiple calls to Detroit to acquire an engine and then get instructions on how to re-tune the computer system. I bought the LVW-5006 for only one reason. I wanted to copy my family VHS tapes to DVD.. The machine is NOT capable of producing a decent copy. I have called the tech support hotline 3 times, and been advised to download a 6MB file, burn it to CD and then load it in the DVD recorder.. After that the tech support people will be able to assist me in adjusting the unit so that it will copy VHS tapes. Or so they say. IF that works, it will be almost a week from the time I purchased the blasted machine until I finally get to start archiving the tapes. I consider this to be the worse kind of consumer fraud and totally un-American. However the same identical problems exists with Emerson and Sanyo DVD recorders... The user is taking it in the ear, so that the CEOs can make bigger bucks... Enjoy trying to get YOUR tapes archived.
