LG RH177 Review

If you're looking for a HDD recorder at a good price, then the LG RH177 takes some beating! It's definitely one of the cheapest HDD DVD recorders available. The hard drive has a capacity of 80 Gbytes, which puts it at the bottom end of HDD capacity, but still offers 20 hours recording time in XP mode (the highest quality format). The key benefit that a HDD recorder offers is Timeslip - the ability to pause or rewind live TV. In addition you can simultaneously record and play. If you want to make a permanent record of a programme, then you can record from the hard drive onto disk, and the RH177 supports recording on most disk formats: DVD+R (8.5GB Double Layer), DVD+RW, DVD-R and DVD-RW. Disks recorded on the RH177 should be compatible with players and recorders from other manufacturers without too much bother. You can play back nearly very format of disk, including CD and VCD with support for MP3, WMA and DivX, which is all very welcome.

The built-in tuner is analogue, so if you don't have access to digital TV via Cable, Sky or a Freeview box, you'll have to accept analogue-quality recordings. Another downside is that there's no on-screen electronic programme guide and the RH177 also doesn't support Video Plus+ recording. Still, the graphical user interface makes the recorder relatively easy to use.

The connectivity of the RH177 is pretty good, with connections for two SCART's, RGB output, S-video output, component output, DV input (for connecting a DV camcorder) and optical audio output with support for Dolby Digital and DTS.

One thing that detracts from the appeal of the RH177 is the noisier-than-average fan. However, considering the price and the user-friendliness of the recorder, we still rate the LG RH177 at 3 stars and recommend it if you're looking for a HDD recorder that won't break the bank.
