Reviewed by Cliff on 17/12/2008 My experience has not been as bad as the other reviews, but then you only hear "bad" reviews. Got ours Xmas 06 and have only had a problem with it occasionally crashing - no sound or picture problems, and DVD playback sometimes sticky like a dirty disk, although we mainly record to HDD and delete after watching it. Yes the fan is a little noisy, about as noisy as a pc fan but you soon get used ot it, you certainly cannot hear it throughout the house like another post said. Very easy menus and easy to hook up via scart leads to a surround sound tv and record from Sky, again via scart. Rating:
Reviewed by Mike on 23/11/2008 After reading all the reviews i agree that this model from Goodmans is a big disappointment. The Fan is so noisy that you cant watch tv and record something with the sound on low as all you hear is that annoying fan blowing! I cant moan about the picture quality as this seems really good , but the sound quality is somewhat disappointing. Has anyone tried using "Timeshift" for more than about 30 Minutes and then watching the programme from the beginning whilst still recording? The machine suddenly crashes and a blue screen is displayed showing loads of different errors. Only solution is to turn it off and lose the whole programme you have been watching. So annoying. Summarise- Cheap and cheerful- plenty around on Ebay etc- Youll need a calm nature to live with it !!!! Rating:
Reviewed by wayne on 13/04/2008 Owned this dvd recorder for about 2 weeks now and i am not happy when i tryed to finalise its not showing up on the screen so im totally stuck - so ive rated this product up to now 2 please can someone help me Rating:
Reviewed by rob white on 18/11/2007 ditto Desperatley swapping cables around to get it to work correctly freeview doesnt come through and by reading your comments i guess its because it cannot cope with digital connections. yes mine sounded like a dalek until a swift clout on the top of the casing rectifed it Rating:
Reviewed by Rick Watson on 08/10/2007 I've given it 2 stars - but 1 and a half is more like. I agree about the sound - I thought I was going mad at first because it was completely inconsistent - sometimes good, sometimes a little off, and then either not working at all or sounding (as others have said) like a 'dalek' or someone talking down a drain pipe. I would not recommend anyone to buy one - I got mine given to me, and now I realise why (although I'm still grateful for the freebie!!) I must say that I spent hours going through different setups and scart leads, this lead that lead, this setup and that setup, trying to solve the sound problem. It records pictures very well. The sound is obviously wrong on most of them, and the fan is the loudest fan I've ever heard on a domestic piece of equipment ... It's more like a quiet 'hoover' - Yes, it's that bad ... if I leave it on in my bedroom late at night I can still hear it downstairs on the PC even over the sound of my PC's fan ! I've liked GOODMANS gear over the years so I won't be necessarily put off the brand ... But advice to anyone, don't get one even second hand at a knockdown price... Mine was free and that was too much. Rating:
Reviewed by PAG on 14/08/2007 I was sold this machine as having a digital tuner but quickly found it to be analogue. Recording from air or from my NTL cable box was OK to the HDD and the quality at SP was acceptable. Recording from my digital camcorder via the front sockets produced jumpy playback until I found that you need to change the video output to NTSC. Using a DV cable solved this but the camera has to be running before you push record or the Goodmans thinks there is no signal so you tend to miss the beginning of scenes. The biggest problem is that it refuses to properly finalize DVD Rs or make DVD RWs compatible, with the result that you cannot view the results on most other players (my son's X-Box seems to give the best results!). I have already returned the original for a replacement and it has the same fault so I am probably going to ask for a refund and look at other models. Rating:

Reviewed by jon woods on 16/11/2006 Bought this at asda it set up dead easy but as a previous reviewer said it cant record ntl digital . The main problem for me was when you played a bought dvd film the sound deteriated to sounding like someone was talking down a drain pipe the got worse until it went alltogether i replaced it and the same fault occurred. i was told by a t v engineer friend that the sound output was incompatible with my dolby tv but nowhere on this machines menus can you change the audio output. i took the second box back for a refund this has put me off dvd recorders and i wont buy goodmans again you definately get what you pay for. Reviewed by Stephen on 28/06/2006 Very loud fan and the main problem is that when recording from NTL box the playback flickers like crazy and drives you made if you watch it for more than 5 minutes! I bought this recorder from ebuyer which o found from the kelkoo search engine. Rating:
Reviewed by Roger on 18/04/2006 Just a further update.
Goodmans customer service were very helpful and eventually sent me a replacment unit. Unfortunately the replacment had the same problems and a few others. Needless to say this has been returned to the shop for a refund. I do not think that I will ever trust the Goodmans brand again.
To echo the comments of a previous reviewer they have definitely shot themselves in the foot with this one.
To conclude I have had 3 of these machines and none of them worked properly.
Do yourself a favour and buy another brand. Rating:
Reviewed by Roger on 17/02/2006 Extremely disappointed with the unit.
I have had problems with the quality of recordings even at the highest setting. The picture is jerky and shaky and sound quality awful.
I exchange the unit for a new one, which has the same fault.
I am in contact with Goodmans at the moment so will report back with any progress although realistically do not hold much hope. Rating:
Reviewed by Steve on 22/01/2006 Same problems as the previous rewiews. Wasted 10 disks on this piece of junk. Don't buy it. I'm taking this thing back tomorrow, after wasting a weekend trying to get it to finalise disks, even exchanged it this morning
for another one, still no go. I'll pay at bit more for another brand. Shot yourself in the foot with this one Goodmans. Rating:
Reviewed by Chris on 09/01/2006 Very disappointed with this product which is only 1 week old. I found while recording to the hard disk, the recorder displays garbage on left side of the TV screen (like computer program files).
When this happens you cannot stop recoding, you can only stop the recording by switching off at the mains.
This fault is very intermittent and annoying. Also this product
advertises 100 hours of recording on hard disk, this is only possible in SLP mode (utter crap quality mode) which is unwatchable. Normal SP mode is about 30 hours, any mode above LP mode is very bad quality.
There may be good points about this machine, but as I intend to return it to Curry's for another brand as soon as possible, I won't find them. Rating:
Reviewed by Pierre G on 20/11/2005 I bought this DVD recorder a couple of weeks ago and was very excited about it, however the initial joy at having such a lovely piece of kit quickly wore off when i discovered that if you record programmes at high quality onto the hard drive you have to do a multi disk burn, the display gives very limited information on what's happening then it crashed. For example if you record a 2 hour movie then you will have to use 2 disks unless you record in a lesser quality. Very annoying. My recorder has also decided that it will not finalise any of the disks i use and so i have wasted alot of effort and money. I only discovered this recently when trying to play a dvd on another machine. I have also recently realised that the dolby sound it boasts is only stereo. REALLY annoying. I want to give the machine back and get another one. In theory a really good machine; in practise a very annoying purchase and i feel somewhat cheated. Another stupid thing is that on a recordable dvd you can edit chapters, but for some reason this is not incorporated into the functions of the hard drive. To be honest i really don't think it would have been too hard to do this. I'm so angry as i recorded 6 hours of one of my favourate shows and I can't get it onto dvd as i used high quality and it wants 6 disks and crashes while burning every time i try (to my annoyance and . Can't edit chapters into it to cut it into chunks. Now i can't watch it with the Mrs when i goto see her without taking the machine with me. Can't burn it to dvd as i deleted it off the sky+ box. Now it's stuck on the hard drive. When i give the dvd player back everything i've recorded will be lost as none of the disks are finalised. not happy. Rating:
