The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1 is a camera aimed at enthusiastic amateurs, but at a price similar to a good quality "point and shoot." Importantly, it has a high megapixel count (5.1) and very high 12x optical zoom. It is compatible with conversion lenses, making it possible to extend the camera's capabilities. The LCD screen is an excellent size at 2.5 inches. The language options on the menu are English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian and Swedish. Movies can be recorded at 30 frames per second. The "Super Steady Shot" feature helps keep images extra sharp.
As you would expect from a camera aimed at enthusiasts there are a lot of manual options, including manual focus and manual white balance, but with all the automatic features as well. White balance options are Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent, Incandescent, Flash and One push. The range of scene selection modes covers Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Portrait, Landscape, Beach, High Speed Shutter and Candle.
The software included with the camera is Picture Package, PIXELA ImageMixer and USB Driver.

I own this and the Canon S2-IS so am in the excellent position of being able to "without predjudice" compare the two. Canon and Sony both have superb colour rendition-once you set up the camera away from the factory presets.The Sony has by far the better quality screen as it is much larger and clearer and has never, in my experience, been affected by strong light--the Canon is terrible for that, just totally blanks out in strong light. Sony has the live histogram, which in my mind all high end cameras should have as it is an essential tool when using manual mode=and what else would one use on such excellent cameras? Canon has the brilliant swivel screen, whereas Sony's is fixed! mmmm he says if I had to get rid of one, what do I choose as picture quality is about even steven? A very difficult choice, but at the end of the day I suppose I could possibly get by without the live histogram, and I really do like the swivel screen on the Canon--that will of course have to be your choice-unless you buy a camera for the pretty badge of course---I would I suppose give the edge to Sony only because it is much much easier to use and has a much better menu system, also I find I can use the Sony easily with one hand, not so the Canon. I look foreward to the new Sony DSC-H5.

i've shot abot 5000 pics/photos and i am very pleased for this DSC. in my opinion, if you want better results, definitely use a dSLR, even if they are more expensive, they worth the money. for the price/quality i say this camera is very good, for family pics, wildlife, sport pics and as the review says generally for amateurs. it's great.

God, this camera is a master piece. The 12x optical zoom is really amazing. You can never believe that you can take such fantastic pictures. It is not for amateurs as said, it makes u feel amateur photographer. A new encouraging camera for beginners i say. I have not taken many pictures, shot just 750 pics, and i was really very happy for my investment. And the landscapes look more amazing than they are in real. The b/w and sapient features along with 3:2 photos.. i cant' say how great the pics look. And the large lcd screen, its awesome. But, in the night mode, you must must have a tripod to shoot any image, for the shutter opens for a longer period to let more light in.
