Samsung Digimax V70
Product Rating
The Samsung Digimax V70 is a stylish and versatile camera. It offers an extremely generous 7.1 megapixels, compared to 5.1 on its predecessor, the Samsung Digimax V50. This is detailed enough to allow printing up to poster size. The lens is a Schneider Kreuznach lens, renowned for their quality is producing clear images. It comes with 32Mb Secure Digital card, so consider buying a 256Mb or a 512Mb card.
The optical zoom (3x) and digital zoom (5x) are identical to the V50, giving a combined zoom factor of 15x. Macro mode allows focusing as close as 4cm. Optional wide-angle and telephoto lenses are available to extend the camera's capabilities. The wide-angle conversion lens widens the view up to the equivalent of 27mm, enabling picture-taking for subjects as close as 1cm (normal minimum focusing ranges : 4cm~). The telephoto conversion lens increases the optical zoom from 3x to 5.1x enabling a total zoom capability of up to 25x, when combined with the digital zoom.
Useful features include the flip out and rotate LCD screen (pictured) for low and high angle photography and the 10 scene modes (Portrait, Children, Landscape, Close-up, Sunset, Dawn, Backlight, Fireworks, Beach&Snow and Text.) The camera also offers manual controls for the more experienced user. The camera has detailed focus control with Manual Focusing. It also enables manual control of exposure using Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and fully manual options. Exposure may be controlled by the easy to use Jog Dial in conjunction with an AE Lock function.
The Digimax V70 uses MPEG-4, a high-compression, high-quality movie clip file format, which can record up to 3 or 4 times longer than MJPEG, the usual format for DSC movie clips. The Digimax V70 can even be used as a camcorder since it supports more than 1 hour of video and audio recording time if you are using a 256MB memory card. The movies can then be played back at TV quality as the Digimax V70 can process movies at up to 30 frames per second. The length of the clip is only restricted by the amount of memory available.
The Digimax V70 can use 9 kinds of power supply using the unique technology of Samsung. The exclusive 1400mAh Li-ion battery enables users to take 440 images on one charge.

Reviewed by Kev on 10/12/2004 Having problems connecting to USB. It works on other computers but not mine. Movie mode suffering from what looks like dropped frames. I have used the V6 which has the same movie mode and that was v.good but used avi format instead of mpeg4. Hopefully its just a setting that needs altering. The rest of the camera is good. Easy menu system, detailed pictures with plenty of colour and life. If you dont want the movie functions I would opt for the V6 model. Rating:
