Samsung Digimax A50

Product Rating

Samsung Digimax A50 The Samsung Digimax A50 is a sleek, gently curving camera which looks stylish and up to date. The 5 megapixel resolution is great but certainly not uncommon nowadays. The 3x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom are pretty much standard on good quality point and shoot cameras. What distinguishes this camera from other similar models is the enormous 2.5" LCD screen:

This huge LCD screen will make editing images much easier. The editing functions in the camera include a slide show of pictures taken, resolution changes, a trimming function, image rotation, and picture protection.

The Samsung Digimax A50 only comes with a paltry 11Mb of internal memory so an external memory card will be essential. However, you can use the Copy to Copy function to transfer images from the internal memory to external memory.

There's a reasonable selection of Scene modes to choose from (Night, Portrait, Children, Landscape, Close-up, Sunset, Dawn, Backlight, Fireworks, Beach & Snow) to help get the right exposure and flash for the conditions. Additionally you can adjust the White Balance choosing from Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent, Tungsten, and Custom. Colours can be adjusted with the RGB function. The Colour Effect function means images can come out in black and white, sepia, blue, red, green, or film colour. The Photo Frame function lets you choose one of nine different borders with which to frame your shot.

Movies on the Samsung Digimax A50 are recorded at 30 frames per second to give smooth playback. There's a Pause function available when shooting a movie so you don't have to completely stop and restart. Some cameras now offer an anti-shake function for still images but the Samsung Digimax A50 has this available for movies.

The digital voice recorder function lets you record for up to one hour, or you can add 10 seconds of voiceover to a stored still image.

Features of the Samsung Digimax A50 include:

  • 5.0 megapixels
  • 2.5 inch LCD
  • Mpeg-4 VGA 30fps Movie
  • Quick mode change button

After research, I've replaced my bigger Fuji (3Meg) with the A50. Amazing value. Photography's been my hobby for years & the A50 is brilliant & all I need. The 5Meg pics are as good as anyone, other than perhaps a professional, or someone very picky, could reasonably want. No point in setting the A50 below 5Meg so I've not tested below 5. The video is very good too &, at 30 fps, smooth. The sound mutes when using zoom. No problem with the lack of viewfinder. The 2" wide lcd screen is, well, big. Only criticism: The in-built picture frames are a bit naff & I won't use them. The A50 is VERY easy to use (by anyone). I use only high capacity NIMH AA's & keep a spare charged pair handy. Also a 512 memory card which, at fine setting, holds loads of pics & enough good video but I have a spare memory card - just in case. The A50 slips in my pocket so in future, on holiday, I don't need to have a camera (& video camera) hanging round my neck. You won't be sorry if you buy it. I'm delighted!
