For its size the Dimage X50 has lots to offer. Great outdoor picture quality, fantastic super macro pictures. The top of the line "X" series camera from Konica Minolta (as of 08/2004), it features 5-megapixels of resolution combined with a 3x optical zoom lens, all stuffed inside an ultra-compact design. Its durable metal body ensures it will survive users day-to-day life, and with its compact size, you can carry it in almost any size pocket or purse. This is a point-n-shoot camera that offers the simplicity of automatic exposure control, with some creative pre-programmed scene modes as well as some handy on camera editing, 30fps video and nice sequence shooting. It also allows you to manually select ISO, white balance presets, exposure compensation, metering, etc. It has a solid sliding cover for the lens that is not flimsy, even a tiny metal sliding door for the small USB connection, nice touch. The menu functions are easy to learn and use. You can select the flash mode, sequence shots and even timer right from the control buttons without having to go two layers deep into the camera's programing. The users manual is very helpful and comes with some useful software. When shooting indoors, the flash is adequate for most interior shooting, and its 37mm wide angle focal length is sufficient for most group portraits. It did have an average amount of noise in high/low contrast areas, this may disappoint you if you are not used to compact cameras, but they say that this is a common thing with most compact cameras that feature a very small imager with high resolution. I just set a button manually select the ISO 50 setting when shooting in these conditions and that solves the problem. This is a trade off for the small size, remember how you hated lugging a larger camera into events and parties where if you bring the camera you have to always be mindful of it... ("Where did I set it down, I can't hold my plate and this camera or why in earth did I bring this huge camera bag"). When shooting macro photos using the flash, it "throttles down" well to ensure you don't over-expose your subject. This is very helpful when shooting product shots for inclusion at online auctions. Here's the bottom line - the DiMAGE X50 will make a good choice for anyone who wants an easy to use, durable, and ultra-compact camera. Its 5-megapixel images have plenty of resolution to create high-quality 8x10-inch or larger prints. If you want to take the cool shots with good image quality without the hassle of all the gear, this one is for you. If however you want perfect pictures and you like to look like a press member and carry the cargo that goes with...then maybe take a look at the Minolta A2 or another full size. (Steve / Tom)
