Fuji FinePix E550 Zoom

Product Rating

Fuji FinePix E550 Zoom The Fuji FinePix E550 Zoom is the flagship camera in the new E-series range. The E-series range of cameras is designed for the more serious user than the A-series range. It is slightly larger and heavier (200g, excluding batteries) than the E500 and E510 but offers better quality. It has the same ergonomic grip as the others in the series.

What really distinguishes the E-series is the wider angle offered by the lens (equivalent to 32.5-130 cm on a 35mm equivalent lens for the E550.) This will enable you to get more into the shot. The E-series is also capable of accepting wide angle and tele-photo conversion lenses so these cameras have the ability to get quite powerful. The E550 also has higher optical zoom (4x) and digital zoom (6.3x) than its other E-series counterparts.

The E500 and E510 both use a conventional CCD but the E550 uses Fuji's Super CCD HR with octagonal pixels. In short, the processor doubles the pixels recorded to the card which is good for producing larger images without loss of clarity.

Compared to the E500 and E510 which record movies at 10 frames per second, the E550 records at 30 frames per second so it will deliver better quality movies.

Features of the Fuji FinePix E550 Zoom include:

  • Newly developed Super CCD HR sensor with 6.3 million effective pixels, delivering 12.3 million recorded pixels
  • Fujinon 4x optical zoom lens, equivalent to 32.5–130mm on a 35mm camera
  • High resolution 2” LCD screen for extra clarity and detail
  • Multiple exposure modes, including aperture priority, shutter priority and manual modes
  • RAW file format enabling unprocessed file saving
  • Wide range of ISO settings (80 – 800) for photography in a wide range of conditions
  • 'F' – mode button for fast access to main camera features (resolution, ISO, colour mode)
  • High quality movie capture (640 x 480) at 30 frames per second (fps) with sound
  • Powered by 2 x AA batteries
  • xD–Picture Card™ providing large storage capacity, low power consumption and fast write speed (cards up to 512MB available currently)
  • A/V socket for playback on a compatible TV
  • PictBridge™ compatible for direct printing without a PC

I bought this camera two weeks ago as an exchange for my three week old Canon A95. The Canon is a nice camera but it turned out that it was too heavy and too slow, and it lacks a battery status indicator. The Fuji E550 is more than 30% lighter, is much faster and has a lot of useful functions, similar to the Canon. It features picture quality modes up to 12 MP and ISO settings up to 800! Power consumption is good for 200 shots and an indicator warns on time of low batteries. What I don't like so far: the display is a bit poor in contrast and the mode wheel lock is a bit soft. However, a good and handy camera with a lot of features.
