Canon PowerShot A640 Review

Rating:
Date: 10/01/2007
The Canon PowerShot A640 is a 10.0 megapixel point and shoot camera with 4x optical zoom. It is a sturdy looking camera with a thick hand grip on the right hand side and comes in a slick black finish with a chrome lens. It is not as compact as a pocket sized digital camera and has a fairly large dimension (109.4 x 66 x 49.1 mm) and weighs 245g.
When compared to other cameras within this price range, it has one of the highest megapixel ratings. The 10.4 megapixel count gives great detailed pictures and allows you to print high quality poster size images. The higher the megapixel rating, the sharper the quality of the image will be.
It has a 4x optical zoom which is average for a point and shoot camera within this price range. The focal length is equivalent to 35 – 140mm in 35mm format. The digital zoom is 5x although this is inferior to optical zoom as it looses its quality as it zooms. When you zoom in on an image using optical zoom, it brings the subject closer without you having to physically move whilst not disturbing the focus and the quality of the image as the full resolution is kept.
The video resolution is excellent with 640 x 480 pixels and 30 frames per second, viewable on the large 2.5 inch colour LCD screen or by connecting to a TV or PC. You are also given the option to shoot a video clip at a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels at double the frame rate (60 frames per second) resulting in a slower playback to see clips in slow motion. The LCD screen has a Vari-angle meaning it can be twisted in all direction which enables you to do self portraits easily as well as take shots at an unusual angle.
With the 21 different shooting modes such as snow, beach and underwater, you are able to choose a mode suitable to the situation. The use of My Colours allows different colour effects to be applied to movie clips and images.
The camera has a very good interface connection with USB 2.0 at transfer rate of about 40 times faster then USB 1.1. It also has a video out connection.
In conclusion, this is a very good camera that has a good range of features, the only downside would be that the price is around £220 which is quite steep although you do get a very good megapixel rating for it.

The Canon PowerShot A640 is a high-end point and shoot digital camera. It has a huge number of megapixels (10 megapixels) and a 4x optical zoom lens giving greater zoom power than the more standard 3x optical zoom usually found in point and shoot cameras. It comes with a 2.5" variable-angle LCD screen and is capable of recording movies at 30 frames per second.

Features of the Canon PowerShot A640 include:

  • 10.0 Megapixels
  • 4x optical zoom
  • 2.5" vari-angle LCD
  • DIGIC II and iSAPS
  • 9-point AiAF and FlexiZone AF/AE
  • 21 shooting modes and My Colors
  • High-speed ISO 800
  • Safety Zoom & Digital Tele-Converter
  • 1cm Macro mode
  • 30fps VGA movies
