I purchased the Canon MV600i after some investigation and a friend showed me its performance and ability. What has happended since is an education in reality. First his failed after 1 hour of tapeing. Canon wanted $160 plus 3 months to fix it. They returned it 3 months later but wanted the $160. After threatened legal action they dropped the demand for payment. My camera performed badly over the next 6 months later after 4 hours of tapeing it failed altogether while in NZ. Canon Auckland advised the units had a CCD failure a world wide problem. Interestingly Canon made no attempt via their sellers or agents or warranty registration cards to contact owners and advise them to return their units. I wonder why? This is possibly the fault reported by an earlier submission but not admitted by Canon. They advised I should return it for for repair. I did and I specifically asked Canon in writing to confirm that there were no other problems with the unit, if there was I would pay extra to have it fixed. Canon responed no other problems. On its return I took the unit on another trip of 2 weeks in central Australia by air safarie. 1/2 hour later it failed again. But you don't know it has failed until you replay the tap and there are no images. Returned camera a second time. Canon state that the second failure was not the CCD and did not relate to the first repair, but made great effert to say that they would not charge. The failure was due to dirty heads and I should buy new tapes when I wanted to use the unit. Excuse me, The principle of the video is that you can record on the tapes more than once especially when they are JVC and Sony tapes. Not cheap supermarket brands. Apart from the fact that it had done very little work and the heads had been cleaned in NZ trying to fix the problem. The first time I returned I would have expected they had cleaned the heads to prove it had no other faults. Most tape cleaning manufactures state that the heads should only be cleaned after 50 hours use and never less than 25 hours use. Aftyer its return and after 30 minutes of tape the unit has malfunctioned again. I am now attempting to get either the unit replaced with a quality camera or this one repaired and reliable. They designed it they made it.I don't think that is too much to ask. But Canon abviousley think so. Canon are no longer for keeps but for a giveaway option. My recomendation don't bother with Canon. They do not support there product and it is as useful as a chair with 2 legs.

Mine broke after just 18 months - the sensor went, so no more filming. A repair estimate of 250 quid? Not a chance. That's 250 quid going toward a new Non-Canon camera. Not impressed. Nor was I impressed with it in operation - the whine from the motor is just _so_ audible - great for ruining those lovely recordings of tranquil holidays.

I read all the video magazines for about 3 months before buying. For the low to mid range buyer there seemed to be only one logical choice. The Canon MV 600 range. Reviewers all praised the ergonomics, the handling and the picture quality. Having bought one I can add. The ease of operation is superb. If your' in a hurry, it's quick to set to full automatic mode, and the results are great. If you've got time and want to manually set the camera up, fine that's really easy too and the results superb. The large buttons on the upper face have dual functions, transport and manual override. Press the play button whilst in camera mode and you can manually adjust the focus with the thumbwheel knob at the lower right of the camera. Press the stop button and exposure can be adjusted. Manually setting the white balance is very easy but it would be better if it could be directly accessed from the transport buttons. Compared to other camcorders the Canon is not pretty, but pick it up. It's really satisfying and comfortable to hold. The zoom and transport motors are virtually silent and the microphone quite amazingly sensitive. Some magazines have criticized the image stabilizer, saying that it was ineffective. This is not the case. Usually image stabilizers degrade the picture quality. Switching them on and off has an obvious effect. The image stabilizer on the MV600i is subtle and does not degrade the image. Zooming in on an object and switching the stabilizer on and off demonstrates its worth. There are plenty of superfluous functions, such as a 360X digital zoom, (this can be switched off) and loads of pointless digital effects. But there are also really great features like wide screen capability, a stills button; the zoom can be used in playback mode and most importantly, DV in and out and Analogue in and out. You can tell I love this camera, but even I will admit that there are shortcomings. The standard battery life is pathetic. There is an optional long life battery that promises 9.5 hours recording. Low light performance could be better. The lens whilst of good quality could do with less zoom and more wide angle. As it is, shooting in the average home is difficult. For the price there is nothing that compares to the MV600i, both the picture and audio quality are superb. The features are excellent as are the ergonomics. In the end you even grow to love its quirky looks.
